Batman (1966) Episodes 47&48

Episodes 47 & 48
An Egg Grows in Gotham/The Yegg Foes in Gotham

Plot:Egg Head steals the city charter and claims that the land is his by law.

Guest Stars:Vincent Price as Egghead. Price is so awesome he takes a silliest ideas for a character and makes him so memorable that he’ll be back in Season 3.

Trivia:During the bat fight Price was only to throw an egg at Burt Ward. But after they had an argument off screen, Egghead ended up pelting Robin with eggs

Niitpick:Seriously that knock out gas is getting old. And I’m getting into the native American stereotypes here, it was fifty years ago.

Bat Silliness:Batman and Robin get doused with laughing gas.

Window Cameo:Bill Dana as his famous Jose Jimenez character he played in Steve Allen shows. We also get an odd cameo by Dragnet’s Sergeant Frank Smith

Bat Gadget:Sad pills to counteract the laughing gas. That makes loads of sense.

Bat Trap:Egghead has kidnapped three millionaires, including Bruce, and vows to reveal one is Batman. It’s one of the more original concepts I must say

Final Thoughts:It’s funny you can tell the episode is going to be well written just by the exposition Bruce gives in the teaser. It has a plot and wont just meander for an hour! I also like while the villain is egg based he uses the other definition of egghead, and is really smart. Do the egg puns get old? Oh my yes. But Egghead’s goal is more diabolical than “I want to steal something” which is nice. He gets control of the city and fires the police and exiles the Duo. Our female for the episode is writing down everything egghead says to record it for prosperity. Sure why not. Also unlike The Minstrel it’s demonstrated that Egghead really is as smart as Batman, even guessing his secret identity! And Vincent Price is always a delight even under that silly make up. Batman wins the day with a legal loophole (which honestly could have been thought out more) and the ending fight is a little silly but I applaud an episode that does something different.

Grade: A-Enjoyably Goofy

It’s hard or me to come up with a favorite episode, but there are a few I hated. And we’ll discuss one tomorrow. Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!
