Episodes 91 & 92
Pop Goes the Joker/Flop Goes the Joker
Plot:Joker tries to extort the Gotham Museum of Art
Guest Stars:Cesar Romero as The Joker
Trivia:You may see some similarities in this plot to a certain Tim Burton movie that came out in 1989
Niitpick:One of my favorite scenes happens here when Joker finds the entrance to the Bat Poles. Thankfully there is a reversal switch so Alfred gleefully keeps sending Joker up and down over and over. Bur don’t worry at the start of the episode we see Alfred has put a fresh count of paint on the wall and poles, thus removing the signs, so Joker can’t read the signs indicating where the poles go. Lucky!
Bat Silliness:Joker gets paint on Batman’s outfit which remains there for the episode.
Bat Gadget: Batpole’s have an elevator function.
Bat Trap:Robin trapped on a giant mobile while Bruce Wayne watches
Final Thoughts:We’ve done tributes to everything from silent movies stars to politicians to cowboys, so why not the art world? They could at least be subtle! Joker invades an art museum and paints over famous paintings...now where have I heard that idea before? Anyway, why is Joker destroying these works of art? To take credit for them and get the money. What do you mean that makes no sense? Then Joker enters an art contest, for some reason. This scene goes on for days. Watching people paint is not interesting. Unless its Bob Ross. Joker paints nothing, and wins. It’s a common trope to parody the more extreme art critics and how they find beauty in the oddest things (Murphy Brown did it for instance) and call obvious garbage genius. That is what this episode seems to be doing. Joker wants to open an art school and enroll millionaires. Why? Got me. Of course Bruce Wayne enrolls. Joker then kidnaps them all, yeah that’s where this was going. How original. Our woman for the episode is Baby Jane who has a rich father and supports Joker. She keeps the plot going by admiring him. Even when its clear she shouldn't. By the way that actress was horrible. Batman outwits Joker (another obvious twist) and the episode ends with an admittedly hilarious final encounter between Alfred and Joker at Wayne Manor.
Grade:C+, what was setting up as an interesting new scheme turned to a been there done that ransom plot. Boring except for seeing Romero do his thing.
