Top 10 Disney Animated Adaptations

One thing Disney has always excelled at is there adaptations. In fact more movies than you may even realize are adapted from existing novels and fairy tales (101 Dalmatians for instance, “The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith”). It takes a lot to take a story that has been adapted a million times and do it well enough so people almost forget there was an original source. So what I decided to do was list the ten films that I think adapted the source material the best to the point where they were really close to the source and maybe even elevated it a bit.

This will not include Lion King (I don’t think it was meant to be a spin on Hamlet or Kimba) or Frozen (I’ve heard its connection to Snow Queen is tenuous at best). Princess & The Frog made a lot of changes and Pocohanta was more American History than a novel (besides it gets so much wrong it’s ridiculous). And let’s forget about the lame live ation re-make’s here, FYI the Lion King one was painful.

#10.The Little Mermaid
To be honest this barely makes the lsit, the changes to the Hans Christian Anderson story being so great. It seems the only think Disney kept was Ariel’s motivation, to be human. Just about everything else is changed including the ending where sacrifices her life. Some things from the love story are still there, but not a lot.

My Favorite Characters-Thumper

As we keep on going with this wonderful virus, I wanted to come up with an idea that would give me something to do as I wait for actual work to show up. Then I had an idea. A few years ago I did a list of my favorite characters. I set the list to 20, and yet commented that there were plenty of others that I could have put there. So for the month of April every day I will spotlight a character I love. It can be from anything-TV, movies, comic books…whatever. Let’s start today with an old childhood favorite!

As a kid I had never been the biggest Disney movie fan. I grew up in the 80’s where Disney had lost respect with their new released. Yeah the classics were there, but I only liked Snow White snow much and HATED Pinocchio. I do however remember seeing Bambi in theares during a re-release. The characters are dull and mother killing trauma aside, there was one thing about that movie that I absolutely adored.

Thumper!

Evetime I went do Disney World I had ot buy a new Thumper plush. Don’t as me why I was never able to hold on to them. There was just something about this little guy that I loved. That scene where and he and Bambi are playing on the idea is one of my favorite scenes in a Disney movie. He’s cute, but smart to in a wiseacre kind of way. He thinks he knows it all until he realizes maybe he doesn’t. At the same is very respectful, remembering what his father has told him and obeying his mother.

I may have mentioned before that I hated the romance section of that movie, it was so forced and way to over the top. And yes that includes Thumper, who was as boring as the other characters when he’s grown up. I watched his scene again to see if maybe I wouldn't mind it with adult eyes. And I think I got a cavity. Seriously except for Thumper and Flower what was up with that movie and not bothering to give any of their characters identities? We had asshole deer, female love interest, and assorted other animals who never got named. Did the Owl have one? Sometimes I get the feeling with early Disney they were more concerned with the pretty animation than telling a good story.

Ok off on a tangent there. I did see Bambi 2 and liked some of the retcons it did, like giving an identity to the mystery deer from the first movie that Bambi fought. That scene was so boring since this was a no named deer who had never been introduced, so I had zero investment. Bambi II wasn’t great but for a Disney sequel it wasn’t god awful. It told a story which I think made sense, what happened after Bambi went off with his father? The first film just jump ahead like the previous scene never happened.

Well there you have, one of my favorite Disney characters ever. I’ll probably keep doing these for now so see ya tomorrow. And remember, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all"

I’m really quite shocked I never covered this one. I guess it feels like I did because I’ve commented on great blogs done by others.

A Look at Disney Anthology TV Openings

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I couldn’t come up with any anniversaries this year. Then I realized it was Garfield’s 40th. And then I realized it was Superman’s 80th. And hey guess who else has a birthday this year? Yes there’s yet another one later this year for a certain little mouse. Makes you wonder how much attention I pay to things when three icons I love have birthday’s this year and I didn’t realize it.

Six Underrated Disney Songs I Love

I haven’t talked about Disney in awhile. And as I look through my previous stuff I realize I haven’t discussed Disney music nearly enough. Music from Disney movies is always something special. They always go that extra mile so not only is the song fitting in the movie but it so well done that it tanscens the movie and is just a massive hit. In 1995 I heard “Color of the Wind” constantly on the radio. And is there anybody who can’t sing along to “A Spoonful of Sugar”? And the villain songs are even better, but that’s another article.

So What Did I Think of “Inside Out”??

Yes I’m stealing this idea from Tamara Chambers, but hey a good idea is a good idea. I wasn’t planning on making this a series but figured I’d give it a try. So anyway…

Classic Disney Movies on My “Must See” List

We all have those movies we never saw, and always wanted to. No matter how much we love movies, there’s always some we miss. Heck Tamara Chambers does a whole web series on the great movies she never saw. Even Disney movies fit that criteria, as hard as it may be to believe. There are Disney movies you’d swear the whole world must have seen at least once. I haven’t, yet.

Ten Earworms From Walt Disney World That Will Never Go Away!!

I love Disney World! There is so much I could talk about, but today I wanted to focus on the rides. Not the actual ride, but the music that went with them! Unlike most amusement parks which throw some sort of goofy calliope on all their rides, Disney has really good and memorable melodies to go with their attractions.

In fact I used to have a CD of Disney World music and I can tell I played it plenty of times. There is just something about those tunes that will never ever let you forget them. If you remember mt first earworm article I already talked about the big one most people think about, It’s a Small World After All. Want to hear it again?

That isn’t the only one. Here now are ten earworms from Walt Disney Word, EPCOT, and/or Disneyland. Most of these attractions have quie a lot of history surrounding them, but we’d be here all day if I covered all of that.

The important thing to remember is these are from when I was growing up, a lot of these have been changed or eliminated altogether by now but I will never forget them.

10.Carousel of Progress

I love this one but the reason this was such an earworm for me isn’t because it’s catchy, but because thanks to a thunderstorm my family got stuck listening to the same segment over and over! Seriously though I love this attraction (it basically uses animatronics to illustrate the changes over the course of a century) and while they keep changing the song, “Now is the Time” is the one I always always remember. “It’s Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” is fine too. FYI both songs were written by The Sherman Brothers. Yes, those Sherman Brother! The Academy Award winning songwriting team from Mary Poppins among others. This ride has quiet a history and is worth checking it out, in fact it was said it was Walt Disney’s favorite

Five Unanswered Disney Questions That Bug Me!

I know I kind of blew the “Disney Month” I was doing (though cartoon all-stars to the rescue could almost….nah). But I have had this one on hold for a long while so I decided to finally get it out.

Unlike, say, DC Comics which tries to maintain a continuity with its characters (kinda) it’s clear that Disney doesn’t do that. Their characters are the same but little things will change either due to different creators or just the passage of time. As much as I love Disney, there are all kinds of strange things that bug me. From character retcons to changes which make no sense and often go away with no reason, here are five Disney questions I have never found a solid answer for.

Why don’t Huey, Dewey, and Louie ever age?
Huey_Dewey_and_Louie
Seriously, what the hell? How long are they supposed to be little kids? I mean, to be honest this wouldn’t bother me so much. Except for one things. Max grew up!!! Yeah, Goofy’s son Max was a cute kid in Goof Troop, but as the series left to sequel movies he grew into a young man (er, dog?). So why not Donald’s nephews? Ok they have been aged to teenagers in Quack Pack and House of Mouse, but Max was old enough to be a valet outside the club? And in Twice Upon a Christmas he is clearly a young adult while Huey Dewey and Louis have actually been de-aged. What he hell? The answer outside the universe is easy, to keep these character the same for new kids to discover. But in universe, just once I’d love a story about Donald’s nephews were they weren’t bratty kids!

Top 10 Favorite Disney Villain Sidekicks!! (w LES)

The other day  we discussed Disney hero sidekicks, but the real fun comes from the villain sidekicks! They are there to help the villains with their plans, and to fill a role that the villain lacks (usually in the comic relief area). Serious villains have goofy sidekicks while the goofier  the villain usually the scarier the sidekick. Let’s not waste any time let’s dive right in…….

RichB:Let’s talk about a nasty pair of sidekicks which are often forgotten.

#10.Desoto and Roscoe (Oliver & Company)
c6de02a5a546dd92f5d4653f0ca6a607
These Doberman’s meant business! It seemed to be a rule that the goofier the villain, the more serious the sidekick. And these guys were not kidding around. They spoke with soft Italian accents and were just menacing. When they chase our heroes, you really feel they are in jeapordy! These guys are a bit underrated, but are totally worth remembering!
Well Les after the other day I am dying to see your choices. What is your first?

LES:  Well, I gotta applaud your choice, as many people seem to forget all about Oliver & Company(likely because it’s the film right before “The Little Mermaid,” but I digress…Yeah, Desoto and Roscoe were definitely intimidating and a good match for their master, Mr. Sykes(Robert Loggia)  For my #10, I’m going with a robot with an attitude

Top 10 Favorite Disney Hero Sidekicks (w Les)

Since this has sort of become an unintentional Disney month (Star Trek blog on the 1st aside), why not go all the way with it? I talked about the minor characters in my last two articles, but what about the sidekicks? Heroes and villains both have them, and mostly they are there to bring in some comic relief. Though once in awhile they do a little more than that.

I decided that there was no way to do this justice alone (as you’ll see I there are many Disney movies in my “still have to see” pile”). So my friend Les offered to help.

RichB:Welcome Les!

LES:  Hi rich.  Thanks for having me in on this one.
RichB:My pleasure my friend!  So let’s start with my #10 choice for the hero sidekicks —

#10.Flora, Fauna and Merryweather (Sleeping Beauty)
Flora,_Fauna,_and_Merryweather

Staring with this because it’s hard to say they are sidekicks, but there is no real “hero” in this movie. There are only a couple things memorable in this movie. And none of them are Sleeping Beauty herself. The villain is memorable. The final action scene is memorable. And, yes, the three fairies are very cute characters. But what I like about them is that you truly feel they care for Aurora. And the way they try to help in the final battle is awesome! They’re powerful little fairies!

LES:  You make a pretty good point about the most memorable thing about the film isn’t the heroine, but the villain, the final action scene and these 3 characters.  Years after seeing the film, I still remember them and remember them being pretty funny.  As for my #10, I’m going with a mass of protoplasm.

#10  Morph(Treasure Planet)
tumblr_m7nn58O5aW1rsvulgo1_500
This is an interesting character as he’s the sidekick of pseudo-villain Long John Silver…AND hero Jim Hawkins.  It might be his morphability is also prevalent in his personality.  In fact one of the great scenes is during a firefight aboard the ship, Morph has the Treasure Map and Silver’s on one side beckoning him to come to him, and Jim’s on the other side trying to coax him as well.  You can see poor Morph struggling between his two loyalties.  The rest of the time, he’s mischievous and clever, using his powers to imitate anything.

Top 5 Minor Disney Characters I Love!!

So there are three types of characters. The main characters. The secondary characters. And then you have the Tertiary characters. These are characters with roles very small, maybe just a couple of scenes, and often do nothing except to, well, be there they but are memorable characters nevertheless. Sometimes they are comic relief, sometimes they are meant to be what starts the story and/or be rescued at the end, and other times they are just there to fill a role that that the main characters can’t fill.

The other day I talked about Tertiary villains, today it’s time to look at the other side of the coin. These are the good guys that don’t have as much to do, usually only one or maybe two real memorable moments, but they manage to stand out anyway and are as remembered as any pf the major characters.

#5. Gepetto (Pinocchio)
pinocchio-111

Went back and forth on this one. The funny thing is, Gepetto is a minor character in this movie. He vanishes for a large part of it, until the last act when we find out he was eaten by a whale. But that alone speaks for how much heart this guy has. I have said bad things about this movie (it was scary, etc) but the parts I did like were mostly the parts that involved Gepetto. He’s such a nice guy that we are genuinely happy in the end when his wish comes true and Pinocchio does indeed become a real boy. He even gets a laugh when he is also crying over his dead son’s body. That isn’t easy to do!

Top 5 Minor Disney Antagonists I Love to Hate

Been awhile since I did a Disney list. We all know the major villains in Disney movies. From Maleficent to Jafar and so on. But the characters that often get overlooked are the minor villains. Those characters who appear briefly, simply to advance the plot or give the villain’s a means to meet their goals. In some cases they don’t advance the plot at all. they’re filler but are so memorable that we never forget them.

Today I wanted to talk about five such minor antagonists who I love to hate, almost more than the main characters despite their minor roles.  The only rule is they have to be characters who did something nasty against our heroes, and weren’t just there for comic relief or to be redeemed later.

5.Lucifer (Cinderella)

Yeah I know it’s just a cat, but what a nasty kitty! He seems to know and love how evil that witch stepmother is and loves every second she is making Cinderella’s life miserable. He loves it so much, he makes things worst for her! He goes back and makes a mess out of what she had cleaned, and loves every second of her getting scolded. Lucifer spends the majority of the film getting in the way of Gus and Jacques, and is one who does get a comeuppance of sorts. But that nasty kitty is, well, mean! Hey, what is it with Disney and making their cats evil?

Moviefan12: Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney World. Today and all this week, we are turning our attention to television as we take a look at the various ways, Disney World has appeared on ABC. Now, I’m sure most of you are familiar with the ’90s sitcoms, this was an idea from Eisner to promote the park and as much as I may bash him, this is a good idea. But I wish to also talk a about one recent commercial featuring Regina from Once Upon A Time. Joining me today for the first time on A Look at Disney is richb. The expert on all things, TV here at Manic Expression.

richb: A pleasure my friend. Disney and sitcoms have had a unique history, In fact they have done more than some may realize under their Buena Vista and Touchstone Pictures brand. Not to mention the shows which did an episode set in Disney, which was huge when ABC was bought by them in the 90’s. And then there are parade’s not to mention countless specials…Disney has been a big part of TV almost since the beginning!

Favorite Faces of Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is one of the most iconic characters ever, going strong since his debut in 1928. I love him! Have for as long as I can remember. As the years have gone by we have seen several different versions of the lovable mouse, but no matter what changes they may make to the lovable guy it's always Mickey! Today I wanted to take a look at some of my favorite versions.

Before I begin let me stress that I am by no means an expert in animation or graphic arts. This isn't intended to be a comprehensive analysis, I am just a fan.

So let's start with the live version. Actually, Mickey's look has changed a lot over the years since Walt Disney World first opened. They keep modifying the look and making it more sleek. A few years ago they gave the characters an articulated head which made it possible for all the characters mouths to move and eyes to blink when they talk! Nice change from having the voice mysteriously come out of the character while they just stare at you. In fact  the evolution of his look at Disney is amazing, the costumes being just plain scary in the old days! There are video's out there which showcase the changes so check them out.

Of course it's the animation side which has seen the most change. Sure, the look is basically the same but as time goes by it is inevitable that the character will look different. Here are some examples :

So here is how he looked when he first appeared in "Steamboat Willie" back in 1939! And he kind of looked different. Black eyes, kind of scrawny, a tail, and he also didn't speak, preferring to squeak. The animation had a way to go but it's still Mickey.

Special TV:The Dream is Alive, the 20th Anniversary of Walt Disney World (1991)

The last two times that I talked about a Disney special I ended up saying that I was disapointed with the specials. So today I wanted to talk about a Disney special that I just love. It came on in 1991 as Disney World was getting ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The theme of the special was The Dream is Alive!

But while it's one of my favorite specials, does that mean it's perfect? Let's take a look at :

Plot:Actually pretty simple. As the occasion of Walt Disney World's 20th Anniversary approaches then Disney Ceo Michael Eisner tries to find a big named celebrity to host the event. Despite asking several major celebrities he comes up empty, and ends up hosting the special himself.

Yeah, that's about it. So let's take a look at what I liked and what I hated.

Special TV-Mickey's 60th Birthday (1988)

Many years ago I went to a Disney on Ice show. I ended up having a great time because rather than just have the characters skate for 90 minutes, they gave this show a plot! There was an actual story, as the Wicked Witch from Snow White cast a spell and kidnaps Minnie, Daisy, and some human girl. Of course Mickey, Donald, and a human guy have to charge to the rescue. They have a sword fight to rescue the girls, and it was just so cool to see a story rather than just a boring ice show.

Why am I telling you this? Because that is what I am reminded of when I watch the TV special I want to talk about today which premiered in 1988. Mickey's 60th Birthday!

This reminds me of the ice shoe because rather than just get a glorifed clip show we get a special which has a story! Is it a good story? Well, that's another discussion entirely. This is one of those programs where What seemed really cool as a kid seems down right peculiar today when looked at with adult eyes. In fact, the more I watch it the more I realize that they really missed the target with this. Let's take a closer look.

Five Ways Disney Ruined Their Own Trailers in the 80's and 90's

I have not seen any Disney trailers in a while (is it me, or do they not advertise movies on TV like they used to?). But in the 90's I did, and the trailers were always so annoying. It was almost like Disney was so sure about its product they felt they could throw together any trailer and it wouldn't matter.

Just so you know this is all in good fun. Anyway, here are five things Disney did to ruin their own movie trailers.

TO MUCH TALKING!

This happened with the animated films a lot! Now I mean no disrespect to the guy who did these voiceovers, he was great, but my lord shut up!  First he had to remind of us of the earlier fimes. Then He had to tell us who the characters were and set up the basic plot. How about letting the scenes from the movie speak for themselves without a plot synopsis? And finally he always had to point out how the heroes were onto an exciting adventure the whole family would love! It's like they were trying to convince us that yes, there will be a story! A good trailer should be able to give an idea who the characters are and what the story is about without it being spoon fed to us. And just once I would have loved the guy to say "A terrible movie your whole family is sure to hate!"
