Episodes 39 & 40
The Minstrel’s Shakedown/Barbecued Batman
Plot:The Minstrel uses music to threaten the Gotham Exchange.
Guest Stars: Van Johnson as The Minstrel
Trivia:Phyllis Diller gets a pointless cameo (not in a window)
Niitpick:Um, who’s Van Johnson? I know most of these celebrities by now but not this one. Someone want to fill me in? At the end of Part 1 Batman and Robin storm in and it’s clearly Ward’s stunt double with a clearly recorded line of Robin over the scene.
\
Bat Silliness:O’Hara must be having a bad day as he seems to suggesting Batman could be in cahoots with Minstrel. Like when Gordon chew him out.
Bat Gadget:The Bat Drone
Bat Trap:Batman and Robin being barbecued. Which is close to yesterday’s trap! This time they’re rotisserie d
Final Thoughts:Villains using music (or sound waves) as a weapon is a popular trope in comics. But here it’s done badly. At least Batman is competent in this one. The Minstrel is such a bore even Batman points out that he’s faced worst foes. Johnson isn’t as bad as Carney but he sure didn’t come off as real threat. They tried to sell him as someone who can stand toe to toe with Batman with his smarts, which only sort of works. The token girl works better here, she tries to repent but Batman uses her to catch the Minstrel. When this is discovered she’s pissed. And I still can’t figure out how Batman out though the Minstrel in the end when he sees through his disguise.
Grade:C+, villain is only ok but the script is really good just wish it was more than a lame blackmail plot
King Tut makes his triumphant return tomorrow Same BAT time same bat channel!
