Batman (1966) Episodes 49&50

Episodes 49 & 50
The Devil’s Fingers/The Dead Ringers

Plot:Chandell is blackmailed by his bother Harry to commit crimes, he tries to woo Aunt Harriett so he can steal the Wayne fortune

Guest Stars:Liberace as Chandell and his brother Harry. He was a legend and a really awesome guy. To bad this episode is boring. Liberace plays both characters convincingly. One as himself and the other with an obvious James Cagney impression.

Trivia:This was the highest rated episode of the series

Niitpick:Villains walk into Wayne Manor again, seriously Bruce needs to lock those doors! Funny to see Bruce and Dick away and out of contact with Wayne Manor. To bad this episode wasn’t made today Alfred could have called Bruce on his cell phone! And let me get this straight, Batman & Robin and Bruce & Dick are both away at the same time, then come back at the same time..and no one makes any connection?

Bat Silliness:For the first time Gordon calls Batman and finds out he is not available, And doesn’t find it a coincidence that Bruce is also on vacation. Gordon and O’Hara are devastated to find out that they have to solve the case themselves!

Bat Gadget:Batman has a closed circuit TV to spy on Alfred and Aunt Harriet

Bat Trap:Batman and Robin strapped to a paper perforator

Final Thoughts:I remember this one being a bore. A large part of that is that Harriett gets a decent role, and while it’s nice of them to give her something to do it slows things down. It’s one of the episodes that made me do this project so I can see it again. This episode does change the pace a bit by having Bruce and Dick away at the start. The first part plays more like a Liberace concert, then we get into Chandell wooing Aunt Harriett. No wonder I hated this one. The women in this episode are more than just “the girl for the episode”. The three truly contribute to the plot, almost coming off as more of a villain than the actual villain, This is probably the episode that featured Madge Blake the most, and she is really good. We even see Aunt Harriette has a brain in her head when she realizes Chandell is really Harry in disguise. And even stands up to him! With a gun!! The problem is that the plot is simple and the end predictable, they try to make it a surprise but it’s not. I almost wonder if leaving Bruce and Dick out of the first ten minutes was to pad the episode out. To be fair Liberace does a really good job.

Grade:B- Ok I want to be fair and while the episode is a bore it is well performed and written. We’ll see much worst episodes! And extra points for Aunt Harriette being a badass for once! The Penguin returns tomorrow SAME BAT TIME SAME BAT CHANNEL
