Star Trek TOS Overview (A Private Little War)

Well my friends we have a tough one today. I never liked this episode because it's so dark and depressing. Of course, if you're going to parallel the Vietnam War than that's only natural. I admit it's gotten better as I got older, and understand it more, but this is still far from a favorite. Will it better on a re-watch, years later?

Star Trek TOS Overview (Journey to Babel)

Today we have another episode I love, although I don't think that's as unanimous as I thought. Sometimes an episode can only do a few things great, but they are so great it makes up for the rest of the episode being less than perfect.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Bread and Circuses)

Today we have another episode that I've seen but can barely remember. This episode asks the question that has pondered men for centuries, what if the Roman gladiators had live television? I don't who asked that either.

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Trouble with Tribbles)

Well here it is my friends. The best loved and best remembered episode of the series. And yes of course I love it. It's a wonderful episode that deserves all the accolades it gets.

Star Trek TOS Overview (I, Mudd)

When I watched "Mudd's Women" I really did not like it. The one thing that wasn't bad was Harry Mudd, who was a fun villain. So it's awesome that he got another episode, the only villain in the original series who managed that. This one is gonna be hard summarize toward the end, but I'll do my best.

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Deadly Years)

Yesterday we had a gimmick show. I usually love these, because these episodes are just to have a little fun by doing something out of the ordinary. "Mirror" stories are a dime a dozen but yesterday's was done very well. On the other end of the spectrum in "Spock's Brain" which was a silly idea that got plain dumb. Today's episode falls somewhere in the middle, episodes where characters age are nothing new but this one doesn't really work for me. It's not awful but not great either.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Mirror, Mirror)

We have a true classic today my friends. One of the best loved and best remembered episodes of the series. If I were to guess which episode I have seen more than any other, this would be it. Though that's a tough call!

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Apple)

This is an episode I have a real soft spot for, though I am not sure it's really a good one. It's funny when you don't see every episode over and over you forget how common some tropes are. Take today's episode, which seems to repeat stuff we've already seen several times.

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Changeling)

Hey ever wonder what it would have been like if "Star Trek-The Motion Picture" had been a regular episode of the series? This episode is about as close as you can get.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Wolf in the Fold)

Robert Block gives us his third Trek episode and once again, it's only ok. The potential is there for a good murder mystery but the script falls apart by the end.

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Doomsday Machine)

Yesterday was a fantastic character episode, one of the best episodes of the series. Today we have an amazing action episode, one of the best episodes of the series. Sense a pattern?

Star Trek TOS Overview (Amok Time)

Well my friends we finally made it. This is my pick for the best episode of Star Trek. City on the Edge is great but its a strict romance. Tribbles is great but it's a comedy. This feels like it has all the elements a good Trek episode is supposed to, most importantly the focus is on the friends.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Who Mourns for Adonais?)

This has always been one of my favorite episodes though over the years I feel as if I am in a minority on it.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Metamorphosis)

Much like with "Errand of Mercy", today we have an episode that I always had trouble remembering. However, a little movie called Star Trek:First Contact made me pay attention a little more. What's the connection? Let's discuss the first appearance of Zefram Cochrane.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Catspaw)

Welcome to Season 2 my friends. Where Trek really his its stride, though not necessarily with is first outing. It's a Halloween episode...which doesn't help it. My very first "underrated" article was on this one because while far from perfect I can't help but be fond of it in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way.

Star Trek TOS Overview (Operation--Annihilate!)

Well my friends we made it to the final episode of season one. Which isn't really special, just another episode. Is it a good episode?

Star Trek TOS Overview (The City on the Edge of Forever)

Well here is it my friends. No point in pretending, this is one of the best episodes of the entire series. Some would say THE best, but one or two are better in my opinion. But we can discuss those another day. Today we're discussing....

Star Trek TOS Overview (Errand of Mercy)

This is a classic episode, since it is the first appearance of the Klingons as adversaries. The Klingons of course being the best villains of the series even into the movies. Not to mention that this episode gives us one of the of the best Klingon performances in an episode which resonated all the way to DS9. So, why is it I can hardly remember this episode at all? Not even a "Oh yeah I remember it now" kind of feel.

Star Trek TOS Overview (This Side of Paradise)

I talked about this one before because it's an interesting episode. It's one of those I really liked, but have no idea why.

July 8, 2021

Star Trek TOS Overview (Space Seed)

This is one of the best remembered episodes of the entire series. It's a classic that gave us one Trek's greatest villains and led directly to an amazing sequel movie. So, is it ok that I think the episode is a tad overrated?

July 7, 2021

Star Trek TOS Overview (A Taste of Armageddon)

Yesterday we were introduced to the idea of Kirk vs the computer. We get another one today but the script, and the lesson, work a lot better. Though not perfectly.

July 6, 2021

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Return of the Archons)

This episode has always bothered me. There is just something about it, it makes me uncomfortable to watch it. Does that means it's bad? Let's talk about it.

July 5, 2021

Star Trek TOS Overview (Tomorrow is Yesterday)

D.C. Fontana was one of if not THE best writer on TOS. She gave some amazing scripts including today's episode. So is it wrong for me to say the script is only ok? Let's talk about the very first time travel episode in Trek history. Kudos to her by the way for guessing the Apollo mission to the man would happen on a Wednesday.

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Alternative Factor)

When considering season one there weren't to many clunkers. Even the early episodes where the show was still experiencing growing pains were decent. Today's episode is the one exception. It is generally considered one of the worst Trek episodes, of them all.

July 3, 2021

Star Trek TOS Overview (Arena)

Some episodes are well remembered because they are well written, dramatic pieces of science fiction. Others are remembered, for other reasons.

Star Trek TOS Overview (The Squire of Gothos)

Today we meet a character that many think was the precursor to Q on Next Generation. Do I agree? Let's discuss...
