Batman (1966) Episode 61&62

Episodes 61 & 62
The Penguins Nest/The Bird’s Last Jest

Plot:Penguin opens a high end eatery as a front for a forgery scheme where he steals signatures and beings them to an accomplice in the state pen

Guest Stars:
Burgess Meredith as The Penguin

Trvia:This was supposed to be the first episodes of season 2

Niitpick:We see the warden takes a routine afternoon nap. How do these villains keep escaping again? How can Batman not realize Penguin wouldn’t recognize Alfred didn’t he brainwash the guy?

Bat Silliness:In the teaser Gordon calls Batman from a phone booth while Bruce Wayne is in the adjacent one. It doesn’t get sillier. In order for Batman and Robin to be in costume in the mansion Bruce and Dick have to go down the batpoles, change, then go back up without the change.

Window Cameo:Ted Cassidy as his Addams Family character Lurch. Addams Family, Hogans Heroes, Felony Squad–Does this mean these shows all share a universe?

Bat Gadget:Batman has a massive computer just for keeping track of the inmates at the state pen. You know I’ve been wondering, when did Arkham Asylum first appear in comics?

Bat Trap:Chief O’Hara trapped in a trunk to be dropped into a pool, when Batman and Robin swim in to save him they will be electrocuted. It’s another time when the trap feels like part of the story rather than the story stopping to shove it in.

Final Thoughts:Where back with Penguin appearing to reform but of course he isn’t. When he tries a crime so lame it’s ridiculous, Batman and Robin suspect something is up. Especially when Penguin doesn’t seem to mind being arrested. Even throwing a pie at Commissioner Gordon. But Batman refuses to until he figures out the real plot. Just when the mystery is getting good, they reveal it two minutes later. Thanks for that. I like the female in the episode she gives off a proto-Harley Quinn vibe. After a botched attempt to arraign Penguin (in a pointless yet silly scene) Batman uses Alfred to set a trap for Penguin. Napier gets another chance to shine but it backfires when Batman screws up (Penguin recognizes Alfred, why wouldn’t he>). Penguin finally appears at Wayne Manor (he thinks Bruce Wayne used Alfred to trick him) with Alfred being cooked in a pie (you can’t make this stuff up). But don’t worry it all works out. This good episode gets weird in the end which was a disappointment. It had a good story going overall though. Penguins theme is finally thwarted by a step Bruce Wayne should done from the start, and we all knew would be the solution.

Grade:A-, fun watching Batman stay ahead of the Penguin. To bad this wasn’t the start of the season it’s better than what we had. Catwoman returns tomorrow, same bat time same bat channel
