Batman (1966) Episodes 87&88

Episodes 87 & 88

King Tut’s Coup/Batman’s Waterloo

Plot:A restored Tut kidnaps Bruce Wayne’s friend because he thinks she is Cleopatra

Guest Stars:Victor Buono as Tut. Lee Merriwhether never played Catwoman again but she is in this episode as Lisa aka Cleopatra

Trivia:I haven’t really talked about the minor guest stars in these episodes but what kind of Star Trek fan would I be if I didn't mention not only did Lee Merriwhether appear here and on Trek but Yeoman Rand herself, Grace Lee Whitney, was in this episode as the other Tut girl. Logically since the two shows were on at the same time, a ton of guest stars from this show also appeared on Star Trek. Including Julie Newmar, Frank Gorshin, Malachi Throne, Yvonne Craig, Joan Collins and of course last weeks villain Roger C Carmel. Plus a lot more!!

Niitpick:You know the fact that Bruce and Dick are always doing something related to the plot during the top of every episode gets kind of ridiculous. Once again Gordon hears Batman’s voice a second after Bruce Wayne’s and doesn't recognize it. Even when Batman knows Tut is back somehow.

Bat Silliness:We get a reference to Gordon’s daughter Barbara. Wonder if we’ll see more of her next season? Seriously thought I assume they knew they were doing something with Batgirl at this point so may as well plant the seeds.

Window Cameo:Aileen Mehle, and don't worry I’ve never heard of her either.

Bat Gadget:Bat Battering Ram

Bat Trap:Batman about to be dipped in water while trapped in a sarcophagus. It’s such a good trap we get another classic off screen escape. Robin to be boiled in oil. Batman’s ability to hold is breath is truly amazing!

Final Thoughts:Well we’re off to a bad start when Tut and his two underlings get hit on the head and turn back to evil. Don’t ask me why the two students have the same infliction Tut had. I get the feeling while Buono was a delight the writers had trouble coming up with ideas for Tut. Tut kidnaps a girl and Batman rescues her. That’s the episode. Part 2 tries a little harder As it becomes more of a ransom plot. But I just didn’t enjoy this one. It’s seems to rely only on Buono hamming it up without a real story. The one thing that elevate is how great the performances are, from Merriwhether and Whitney too. They really elevate a weak script into an enjoyable hour of TV. And the end is great where Bruce finally get a little romantic action! Is it weird to say I loved Lee Merriwhether here more than the movie?

Grade:C+, I was kind to the other Tut episodes but this one is kind of flat aside from the actors who all do a really great job. The story was just absent.
