Batman (1966) Episodes 27&28

Episodes 27 & 28
The Curse of Tut/The Pharaoh’s in a Rut

Plot:King Tut is back with a plan kidnap Bruce Wayne!

Guest Stars:Victor Buono as King Tut. It’s typical for the celebrities to have fun bringing their characters to life. Buono seems to be loving ever second of it. And his undeniable charm makes it no surprise everyone remember this guy,

Trivia:The first truly original villain created for the series.

Niitpick:Ever wonder if Aunt Harriett gets sick of being blown off by Bruce and Dick over and over? Ok just what is the gas these villains always use to knock people out (it’s really colored smoke)? Is it ever explained? And where do they all get it, is there a store somewhere that sells it? I could see if just one, say Penguin, used it but they all use it!! I guess it’s less violent then slugging someone with the barrel of a gun.

Bat Silliness:Tbe Batusi comes back! I didn’t explain it before so if you don’t know it’s a silly dance Batman does which involves making a horizontal v-sign with your hands and drawing them in front of the eyes, away from the center of the face with the eyes roughly between the fingers. While doing a weird dance. It’s goofy and silly.

Bat Gadget:Anti-Gas Pill. I don’t know what’s lamer that Batman has that or that he knew the villains would use gas (couldn’t they have shot Alfred?)

Bat Trap:Bruce Wayne is tied to a gurney when he kicks open the doors of the car he is being held in. The gurney then goes rolling right toward a cliff! Uh yeah, great idea there Bruce. Later Batman is held in a giant Egyptian Vase and subjected to the ancient thebean pebble torture to make him a mind slave.

Final Thoughts:I never officially read this but I think this episode was a trend setter. As if after this oe the creator said “Hey, we can get away with anything!”. King Tut was an academic who suffered a head injury during a riot and now thinks he is really the reincarnated Tut. And this one time I can give the women he surrounds himself with a pass, it makes sense for this character. The plan to kidnap Bruce Wayne makes sense but the way it is executed is bizarre. How Bruce could be so stupid escapes me. Batman sets up a trap for Tut which almost blows up in his face and for once Robin has to rescue him which is a nice change of pace. What isn’t a change of pace is when Tut steals the Batmobile. Batman needs to change the security for that thing. But the highlight comes when Batman is captured and Tut subjects him to a pebble torture to make him crack. It’s a scene that has to be, well, seen! In the end Tut appears to be returned to normal after another head injury, but don’t worry he’ll be back. In fact of all the made up villains for this show, he appeared the most!

Grade:A-, Bruce is a little to stupid but it’s a decent episode
