Batman (1966) Episode 31&32

Episodes 31 & 32
Death in Slow Motion/The Riddler’s False Motion

Plot:Riddler uses a silent movie as a cover for his latest crime

Guest Stars:Frank Gorshen in his final Season One appearance

Trivia:This episode was written by Dick Carr. To this day I always think it says Dick Clark when the credit shows up.

Niitpick:Many episodes indicate the villains didn’t escape they were released after serving time. What is up with the legal system in Gotham????

Bat Silliness: Commissioner Gordon finally gets to the see the Bat Cave. At the end Batman and Robin stop by to wish Aunt Harriette a Happy Birthday. Yep. How can she not realize???? And always, always, be careful where you get your free lemonade from.

Bat Gadget:Batman has a method of determining truth so bizarre U can’t even describe it

Bat Trap:At least when Riddler kidnaps Robin this time he tries to slice him up with a buzz saw unlike the pilot when he did nothing. And the way he gets out is the laziest yet.

Final Thoughts:The teaser is so long that when we finally get to Bruce and Dick they cut to the chase and get them down the Bat Poles asap. I find that funny. What isn’t funny is having Riddler reveal the fact the silent movie is a red herring five minutes in. Way to keep the suspense going, now the silent movie nonsense is just that! On the other hand thus story is such a non Riddle story maybe they felt they needed to that to justify the rest of the episode. They seem to forget the riddles are supposed to be clue to his crime, here he seems to throw them out for no reason. Our female of the episode is caught and wont confess. So Batman brings her to the Batcave (with Gordon as a wirness) so he force a confession out of her. Sure, perfectly legal. I found thie one boring. We have Robin kidnapped like an idiot, a brawl for no good reason, and what is the real plot? To steal valuable silent films to hold for ransom. That seems like a lot of trouble and how many times are they use the ransom angle?? Why not just steal cash?. Gorshen is a delight and always gives his best, and his turn playing Charlie Chaplon in the opening was really good. But Riddler seems hushed in parts and the final fight is rushed.

Grade:C, Guess if you’re a silent film fan you may like this one. By the way this will be the last appearance of Riddler on the series for awhile, and we’ll discuss that more later on. Gorshin received and Emmy nom for his work on Batman which is awesome.

Season One concludes tomorrow, Same Bat Time Same Bat Channel
