Star Trek TOS Overview (Wink of an Eye)

Well after the fun we had yesterday it's only fair to get a good episode today. And here we have another I've seen a million times. I think it's one of the better season 3 episodes, even if you have to turn your brain off a little to accept the premise.

Plot:The Enterprise is hijacked by hyperaccelerated, sterile aliens who want the crew for breeding stock.

Guest Stars:Kathie Browne as Deela, Jason Evers as Rael

Nitpick:Yeah the fact that the crew of the Enterprise can do anything in time to defeat to the hyperaccelerated Scalosians is hard to take. You don't have to be a mathematician to figure that out.

Summary:

Teaser-A landing party is on the planet Scalos where a distress signal came from. However on the planet they find no people at all. There are no life signs except a buzzing sounds Kirk assumes is an insect. As Kirk and Spock discuss what happened to the people, a security guard drinks some water from a fountain and suddenly disappears.

Act 1-Back on the Enterprise there are a serious of malfunctions that can't seem to be explained and fix themselves. Kirk listens to the tape of the distress call that brought them there, trying to figure out what happened to the people. In Sick-Bay to be checked, McCoy reports nothing unusual was reported. Chapel report someone went through the sick bay and rummaged. Kirk hears the buzzing again, and figures that they did bring something back with them when they returned from the planet. Spock calls to report something odd in life support, as the com system breaks down. Kirk orders communicators and phasers for all crewmen and joins Spock at life support. There, they find a strange device has suddenly appeared clearly alien. They aren't allowed close enough to interfere with it however. When the two are pushed back by something, Kirk is more convinced they have been invaded. The fact the ship has been invaded is confirmed by the computer, and Kirk decides to let them make the next move. When he drinks his coffee, suddenly the bridge crew seem to slow to a stop. And a beautiful woman appears, saying her name is Deela and she is the enemy.

Act 2-Deela says there are five of her people on the ship, she is their queen. She explains the crew are fine, he is different. She gave him a substance that accelerates a person to their level, they move in the wink of an eye. She explains they are changing the ship to adjust for their needs. Kirk will live with her on Scalos, he can't go back to the way he was. Kirk tried to stun her but she is to accelerated for that to work. Deela says Kirk will become docile, they always start out angry and then adjust. Kirk leaves the Bridge, and in real time Uhura sees Kirk has vanished. In life support there are now other people there, including the officer who vanished on the planet. The officer is working for Scalosians now and helped them when they came on board. Kirk makes a run at the device but is stunned. When the officer attacks a Scalosian damages him by hitting him. Spock determined here was something in Kirk's coffee and goes to the lab to have it analyzed. Kirk awakens and the Scalosian named Rael explains that the device has not been set up fully yet. Kirk tries to remove it anyway and almost freezes is hands in the attempt. He noticed that the officer has aged and died instantly and Rael explains those newly accelerated age and die when they suffer cell damage. In the accelerated time in the lab, Kirk makes a recording to log. He has surmised that they planning to put the entire Enterprise into a deep freeze for an unknown reason. Deela says the crew will never hear he recording in time.

Act 3-They were normal before radiation poisoned the people of Scalos, accelerating them out of real time and making them sterile. The distress call was a trick to lure a spaceship. However hyperaccelerated living burns people out so they never last very long. They will bring Kirk and another down to the planet, and the rest of the crew in suspended animation as breeding stock. When Deela is distracted by Rael Kirk slips away and puts the tape he recorded into a machine in view of McCoy and Spock. In real time, Spock, McCoy and Chapel determine the substance in the scalosian water. Deela finds Kirk in the transporter room, where he sabotaged it to buy more time. He says he didn't touch it and she believes him. In the lab, Spock hears the buzzing and thinks he knows what it is. Kirk and Deela go to Kirk's quarters while they wait. On the Bridge, Spick takes the recording of this distress call. When he speeds to an accelerated rate, it makes the same buzzing sound. McCoy then reports finding a tape in the computer but all it can hears a buzzing sound. On the Bridge, the tape is played and they get the whole story. Spock saying they cannot deal with them on our level, and must be dealt with on there level. Rael finishes the transporter, but Deela does not answer when called. In Kirk's quarters, Kirk is putting his boots on while Deela brushes her hair.......I wonder what they were doing. Rael barges in and tries to attack Kirk.

Act 4-Deela is able to stop Rael, and tells him to allow her the dignity to like the man she selected. When Rael leaves, Kirk suddenly seems docile as if he has accepted the situation at last. McCoy has developed a counter agent, and asks how they can get it to Kirk. Spock drinks the scaloisian water, and is accelerated to their level. When Kirk follows Deela into the transporter room, he grabs her arm and swipes her weapon. He then runs into Spock in the corridor and they attack Rael and destroy the device. When Deela asks what they will do with them, Kirk says that if they let them go they will probably do the same trick to the next spaceship. And Deela says that there wont be anymore, there Starfleet will warn everyone away. Then they will die and solve the problem that way. Later Kirk and Spock beam Deela and Rael back to the planet, and Kirk takes the counter agent. Suddenly he is back in normal time. Spock remained in accelerated time to faster effect repairs on the ship. He finally returns also, and Kirk says goodbye to the recorded Deela.

Final Thoughts:I really liked Deela, she is a pretty well done character as we see her try to make the best of her situation even though she has pain inside. Though the nonsense with Rael being in love with her is kinda unnecessary. If you overlook the fact the episode makes no sense, and I get that is not easy, it's really not bad. I was always a defender of Kirk's reputation as a womanizer, saying he only flirted with them and usually for reasons of strategy. But I may have been wrong about that this is the fourth time he had sex with a girl for no real reason. I can forgive Miramanee and Elaan put him under a spell, but the one here and "Bread and Circuses" were unnecessary.
