Star Trek TOS Overview (Assignment:Earth)

We did my friends, the end of Season 2! I don't think it's a big secret that the final episode is really a backdoor pilot for another series that was not picked up. So I am going to summarize this one down a little more than usual since it's barely a Star Trek episode.

Plot:The Enterprise travels back in time to 1968, where the crew encounters the mysterious Gary Seven who claims to be sent by advanced beings trying to help Earth.

Guest Stars:Robert Lansing as Mister Seven, Terri Garr as Roberta Lincoln

Nitpick:The idea that the Enterprise is in the 60's doing research makes absolutely no sense. The only thing good about it is that it gives Kirk something to reference in Star Trek IV when he suggests using time travel to find some Humpback whales. I love the end when Spock says there history tapes show that what happened was supposed to. Um, what else would it show the history tapes would have changes instantly if they changed history.

Summary:

Teaser-The Enterprise is doing historical research in 1968 when suddenly the ship is rocked. Spock reports that something is beaming aboard. That shouldn't be possible, but in the transporter room appears a man in a business suit holding a cat.

Act 1-The strangers wonders where the ship comes from, but when he realizes a Vulcan is with humans he realizes that the Enterprise is from the future. The man explains that he is Gary Seven, a 20th century Earthman who has spent time on an unknown planet getting enhanced abilities. Now he is being sent to Earth complete a vital mission. If Kirk doesn't let him go it could alter history and doom their world. Kirk doesn't have any evidence to support that claim, what if Seven is an alien invader sent to attack Earth? Seven tries to escape, even Spock's nerve pinch fails, but a phaser stuns him. Later, as Kirk, Spock and McCoy discuss what to do, Seven escapes the brig and manages to beam off the ship.

Act 2-Seven arrives at his office and asks the computer where the two agents he was supposed to join are. Seven has to explain his mission to clear the computer so he explains that he has arrived to prevent Earth civilization from destroying itself. Kirk has decided that since there still to many questions about Seven, their best course of action is to follow him down and determine his intentions. The U.S. is launching a suborbital platform with a nuclear warhead to maintain balance of power. Seven plans to disable it. The rocket has not been set to malfunction, and the agents are still missing. An Earthwoman named Roberta Lincoln arrives but Seven confuses her for one of the missing agents. By the time he realizes his mistake Roberta has become aware that things are not what they seem. The computer explains she is a secretary hired by one of the missing agents. Seven later learns the agents were killed in a car accident. Kirk and Spock track down the office,  but Seven escapes before they can get him. Seven arrives at the rocket base, and observes the rocket he must disable.

Act 3-Kirk figures out where Seven is going but police arrive. Kirk and Spock transport back to the Enterprise to evade the police. As the rocket gets ready for the launch, Seven gets to work. Scotty is able to get some images for the rocket base by bouncing a signal off a satellite. Kirk and Spock beam down to the rocket base, just in time to be arrested. That they can do nothing for the bulk of the show. The Enterprise crew keep searching while Seven continues working. Roberta accidentally activates the transport device, just as Scotty locates Seven on the rocket. When he tries to beam Seven up, Roberta manages to snatch him away and beam him back to the apartment. Seven hopes he can finish his task remotely. Kirk and Spock are still standing around (I think they added a captain's log to remind us they were still in the episode). As the rocket launches, there is nothing but Kirk and Spock to do but watch.

Act 4-The stock footage, I mean rocket, launches. Seven is working to cause the rocket to malfunction, but Roberts is nervous about his intentions.  On the ship Uhura reports military alerts all over the world, and warhead will go off over the Eurasia continent. Kirk makes an attempt for the communicator but fails. Roberta tries to knock out Seven, but he tells her if she stops him then world war 3 will begin. The bomb will go off on impact, and in the confusion Kirk and Spock are able to get their communicators and beam to Seven's apartment. Kirk is still not sure if he can believe Seven, Spock saying without facts he has to rely on his human intuition. Finally, Kirk lets Seven finish what he started and is able to make the warhead explodes far enough not to harm anyone just in time. That will scare the people of Earth to avoid nuclear weapons. Later, Kirk and Spock say goodbye to Seven and Roberta, suggesting they may have some interesting experiences in store for them.

Final Thoughts:It really isn't a bad episode, of another show. I'd check the series out if it had been made. Though from I read I think the role of Roberta would have been recast if it had made series. However that doesn't change the fact it fails as a Trek episode and is a sour note to end a decent season on.
