Halloween
is a great time to dress up and pretend to be something else, very
often a monster or creature. This brings to mind all the time’s on Star
Trek when a main character gets transformed into some kind of creature.
It’s usually a strange disease, which of course is cured in the end and
all is well, and other times it's a done surgically. And while these episodes are usually silly, at best, you gotta
admire the special effects which turn a lovable character into a true alien!
Kirk (The Enterprise Incident)
And I couldn’t come up with a classic series example. Except maybe for when the crew were aged. I always liked this one where Kirk was surgically altered to be a Romulus. It doesn’t exactly count but this happened a few more times (as we’ll see) so may as well add it. If I am forgetting one please let me know!
Picard (Best of Both World’s)
One of the most shocking transformations ever on Trek has to be when Picard was assimilated by The Borg. As Locutus he was just plain, scary.
Geordi (Identity Crisis)
The make-up staff went all out with this one. Geordi literally transforms into a completely alien life form
Riker (Genesis)
Yeah this is the silly episode where the crew “de-evolves”. For Riker he becomes a neanderthal.
Troi (Genesis)
In that same episode, Troi becomes a fish. Or something. It was stupid.
Barclay (Genesis)
The one genuine scare in that episode is the shot of Barclay half transformed into a spider
Kira (Second Skin)
Ok this one was just surgically done, but I decided it was still worth a mention. Kira wakes up and discovers she’s a Cardassian? By the way, Troi was also surgically altered to be a Romulan….
The Doctor (Darkling)
When the Doctor tries to play around with his program, he develops a true Jekyll and Hyde persona. He enjoys torturing and killing people. The cool thing is that there is no real make-up here, it’s just Picardo’s performance,
Paris (Threshold)
What can U say? This episode was ridiculous but the make-up effects were good
T’Pol (Impulse)
If you’re gonna have an episode with Zombie Vulcan’s, you gotta have your main Vulcan character get infected. Even it’s not for real.
Happy Halloween!
