Ten months ago I said that this year would mark my 1000th blog and I would celebrate with follow up’s and reposts of old stuff. Well my friends today we have done it, 1000 blogs starting in August of 2011. I can’t express my appreciation enough for those of you who come back and read these silly things I post. These blog’s have become a very important way for me to share things I love, and to escape the stresses of the real world. I went back and forth on what I should talk about for this, and then I remembered this old idea. It was one I always wanted to do but never got around to it. So since it was an old idea I always wanted to do and the anniversary lines up, here we go.
“1984” was a George Orwell book regarding a dystopian future. The funny thing though is that 1984 was one of the best year’s EVER. And I don’t just mean because I turned 10 at the end of it. There are hardly any year’s that managed the success that year did in the world of TV, movies, and music. So since it’s the 35th anniversary, let’s do an overview.
TV:
The new show’s that debuted that year included:
Night Court
This show came along as a mid-season replacement and would stuck around for several years.
The Cosby Show
Say what you want about the man but what this show did can not be forgotten or overlooked. But I’ce already discussed how NBC’s prime time lineup exploded that year.
Who’s The Boss?
This show is so underrated, and I wish it was still on TV somewhere
Miami Vice
Everyone forgets now what a major hit this show was, changing action shows to be more movie-like
Punky Brewster
This show is long overdue for an article
Murder, She Wrote
Just to remind that you CBS was around then
What about the world of Saturday Morning Cartoon’s? One show came along and was so popular it stayed for eight season!
Of course some show’s were hitting their stride, like this little gem:
Cheers won it’s second Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series and it would not be its last!
Outstanding drama went to:
and the #1 show that year, before Cosby premiered, was…
And of course this little show came along….
and is still running!!!
Movies:
This is just amazing. Here are top ten top grossing movies of 1984:
Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom
I guess it would take the team of Lucas, Spielberg and Harrison Ford to by the top spot considering the competition!
Beverly Hills Cop
Ghostbusters
Maybe you’ve heard of this one?
Gremlins
The Karate Kid
Police Academy
Footloose
Not a fan but many people love it!
Romancing the Stone
I wish this movie was remembered more. This was Robert Zemeckis’s big hit before Back to the Future.
Star Trek III
It wasn’t Star Trek II but it was still awesome
Splash
The movie that launched Tom Hank’s career about a man falling in love with a mermaid
I’m proud to say I saw most of these in theaters! Except Police Academy, I’ve never seen that, or Footloose. There are plenty more! I didn’t even mention The Terminator, Last Starfighter, Sixteen Candles, Dune and way more than I can list here.
You’re best picture of 1984 was:
Of course that came out in 1983. With all these amazing movies in 1984, what would win best picture the next year?
Music:
There’s no way I can cover every hit that came out in 1984 but here are a few notable singes from that year:
Purple Rain by Prince
Careless Whisper by George Michael
I Just Called to say i Love You by Stevie Wonder
Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper
Jump by Van Halen
Like a Virgin by Madonna
Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen
Yes 1984 was the year that defined the 80’s!
and of course let’s not forget:
True it was released in 1982, but it exploded in 1984 winning Album of the Year and Record of the year at the Grammy’s
What was Song of the Year?
and yes I should mention the hit that won song of the year in 1985 by Tina Turner…
1984 also gave the MTV Music Awards, Breakdancing, and the first CD players.
Pop Culture
1984 was awesome in other areas as well. This little gem came out:
That wasn’t the only franchise to get its starts in 1984. We also had the very first generation of this:
Yep, and Care Bears too! Plus a little game my family ALWAYS played
ok technically it came out a few years earlier but it was 1984 when it took off.
And 1984 wasn’t just awesome in the world of Entertainment. Hulk Hogan ruled the Wrestling world (a subject for another day). And what about the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles?
Featuring legends like Carl Lewis and Mary Lou Retton, these are remembered because Russia boycotted the games. Elsewhere in Sports my hometown team The Celtics were champions again. Detroit Tigers won the World Series. The Edmonton Oilers the Stanley Cup champions. And the Super Bowl? Oakland Raiders.
Of course we were hip deep in the Reagan years, and that was the year he won re-election in a historic landslide.
And of course, we had this memorable ad:
No, 1984 was nothing like “1984”! It was a great year and I am just glad that I not only lived through it but sort of kind of remember it. I’m sure my good friend Les remembers it better than I, but man what a year that was!!!!
And if you’re wondering what I could possibly have to talk about after doing 1,000 blogs, I really don’t know either. It seems like every time I think I’m done I come up with another idea. So I hope as long as I get ideas, you will be there to read and enjoy my friends. And before I go, one last commercial from 1984 which was one of the most popular ads ever.
Here’s to another 1000 blogs my friends!
1984 happens to be my birth year! :)
