So
I talked last time about how movies use product placements. Some worst
than others. But with TV shows, this is not as common. Usually if you
see a familiar product creators will block out a part of the product
name so that they don’t have to pay royalties to anyone. One show that
did not do this was…
Yeah Friends was awful with their product placements. Somethings are
easy to ignore, like the characters drinking Poland Springs water.
Others are more, obvious. I’d be here all day if I did a run down of all
of them, so instead here are some of the more obnoxious one’s.
Operation (The One with the Candy Hearts)
An early but still worth a mention I think. They never even play the game.
Cap’N Crunch’s Crunch Berries (“The One Where Rachel Finds Out”)
I could be here all day listing the cereals this show has done shout outs for, including Frosted Flakes and Cocoa Puffs
Pottery Barn (The One with the Apothecary Table)
Yeah if you know this episode you know the whole show is basically one giant plug for the awesomeness that is Pottery Barn
Macy’s Bag “The One with Phoebe’s Dad”
Pottery Barn wasn’t alone
“Race” by Studs Terkel in “The One Where Monica and Richard are Just Friends”
Almost looks like an ad for the book, doesn’t it? Other books made it on the show including “Chicken Soup for the Soul”
Newsweek “The One with Joey’s Big Break”
This is one I noticed right off the bat because I had that same
magazine, being a Newsweek subscriber one upon a time. Lots of magazines
made their way on to episodes, even Playboy, and newspapers like
USAToday.
Coca-Cola “The One Without the Ski Trip”
Anyone remember the massive advertising push by Coke when Friends was
going strong? The ad campaign they had helped to launch the series into
the stratosphere. No surprise cans showed up in several episodes. Other
drinks appeared including several beer’s.
KFC Bucket “The One With Ross’ Sandwich”
This is one is so in your face it hurts. Joey would eat other food including Ben & Jerry’s ice cream at least twice.
Ray Bari Pizza
There were a few times the characters ate pizza which had Ray Bari Pizza on the box. Yes that was a real place.
Porsche 911 Carrera Cabrio “The One with Joey’s Porsche”
The product even made it into the title of the episode! We even see Joey sporting Porsche apparel.
Nestle Toll House
These would be the punchline of a joke the whole story was working toward.
Nike Sneaker
I didn’t even get into the various clothes the characters have worn,
including Ray Ban sunglasses, or technology used such as laptops and
cell phones.
Lots more out there, and not just from Friends! If I missed your favorite comment and let me know.
