If you’ve read my stuff you may have noticed one franchise I hardly talk about. Looney Tunes! Not that I didn’t watch these growing up, but for some reason I was never crazy about them like others. Nevertheless, these characters (animated by legend Chuck Jones and mostly voiced by Mel Blanc) are so popular and so beloved that even if you never watched the cartoons, you know who they are. So since I did my ten favorite Hanna Barbera characters a few weeks ago, I decided it was time to give a little love to another animation legend.
Of course ten doesn’t even scratch the surface, so don’t think if I leave off your favorite it means I don’t like them.
#10.Michigan J Frog
As I said I didn’t watch Looney Tunes exclusively, but one of my favorite cartoons ever has to be One Froggy Evening, which is the one and only appearance of Michigan J Frog. It’s a brilliant cartoon with no dialogue, aside from the ragtime music, and a wonderful payoff. The character may have only appeared once, but he endures. So much so he was made the mascot of the WB network back in the day.
#9.Porky Pig
I put him high because the truth is I didn’t even knw much about this character. I just love his sign off (That’s all folks!). Porky is a nice guy (pig?) and he always seems to be brought in when they need someone to be a pushover.
#8.Foghorn Leghorn
This was the hardest slot to fill. I almost had Marvin the Martian here, but decided to switch it. Mostly because Marvin doesn’t have a ton of personality. Foghorn sure does. He’s a wise rooster and one of the few characters who you can tell is an adult. I’m sire they’re all adults but Forghorn really feels like he is a responsible adult. But of course he may enjoy being a mentor to young children that doesn’t mean he can’t be mischievous.
#7.Pepe Le Pew
I talked about this guy before, how funny he is stalking that poor cat!
#6.Yosemite Sam
Bugs had two main nemesis, Elmer Fudd and Sam. Of course Elmer Fudd was a hunter but I never got what Yosemite Sam’s problem was. I guess he had an intense hatred of rabbit’s for some reason. But I picked Sam over Fudd because I think that Yosemite Sam, and his explosive personality, is a little more memorable and was put into different scenarios better than Fudd whose appearances were always the same premise.
#5.Tweety
I talked before about how I don’t feel the hatred for Tweety that so many people seem to have. I think he’s cute!
#4.Daffy Duck
Unlike Donald Duck, who is really nice jut with a temper, Daffy is just despicable. Which is probably what makes him so enduring. While sometimes he is more mean spirited than others, he always has an angle and is always trying to be the best. It didn’t hurt that he was a smart talker, and was able to talk his way out of anything. Deep down he wasn’t all bad of course. But he was the third most frequent character in Looney Tunes right behind Porky Pig.
#3.Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner
This is here for one simple reason. I loved these cartoons, probably my favorite Looney Tunes shorts. And it’s such a simple concept, almost a one joke gag. And yet the creators found new brilliant ways to make the poor Coyote fail miserably. The funny thing is that the Coyote isn’t stupid, the roadrunner is just always a step ahead! Everyone knows the Coyote, he even appeared on Night Court once. No really, look!!
#2.Tasmanian Devil
Not much to say here, Taz is a crazy character who is lots of fun. He hardly talked and has no real character, and yet we all love him.
#1.Bugs Bunny (duh)
Eh, you were expecting maybe the Easter Bunny? Bugs is one of the most iconic characters ever, and there is no way someone can’t know who he is. He’s a wise guy always playing tricks. He’s smart enough to escape any trap laid before him, And he’s so quotable that I could be here all day listing lines of dialogue he has said. He’s been around since 1938 and shows no signs of going anywhere soon.
