25
years ago Friends came around, and was an instant hit. I’ve talked a
lot about this show. Much like Saved By The Bell, I was the perfect age
when this show was on. When it started I was still a kid in college and
when it ended I was an old married man. I did an entire episode guide on
this show so I will spare you anymore gushing. Instead to celebrate the
25th anniversary I decided to countdown the funniest lines and/or
scenes which made me laugh when they first aired, and still make me
laugh today.
Since I already went over Thanksgiving and Christmas moments this list will not include any of those. These are in broadcast order.
Monica Breaks Up
“The One with the Thumb” is the first episode where the series went from “I’ll watch it because it’ on before Seinfeld” to “I really like this show”. And this scene from the episode is so cute and well done.
Poker
The best episodes are the one’s where the group is altogether. And since this is one of the first, it’s naturally one of the best. We’ll forgive the fact poker never comes up in the series again, this episode has some great lines and Rachel at her most adorable.
Ross Finds Out
The series knew that when the time finally came for Ross to find out that Rachel not only knew his secret but that she was feeling the same, they had to do it big. And so they did.
Prom Video
The episode is the series best, and the prom scene an absolute classic. What more do I need to say?
Joey’s Gift
I can imagine there may be wondering what episode this even comes from. This is from when Chandler was crushing on Joey’s girlfriend Kathy. It’s a run of the mill scene but for some reason Chandler’s dialogue always gets a rise out of me.
Chandler’s Worst Nightmare
For some reason one of Chandler’s best lines ever is often cut in syndication. Enjoy it here as we learn how he felt watching Kathy’s play.
Ross says “Rachel”
Yeah how could I not include this little moment? The best part is Chandler’s line at the end, as usual.
“My eyes!”
As I said before, this was another time when the creators knew they had to big. This is the moment when the friends learn just what Monica and Chandler have been doing. First was Joey:
This was upstaged a few episodes later by Phoebe who gives such a well done reaction. It’s nice to see her be completely taken by surprise.
Ross Can’t Flirt
Some jokes are just gold. A combination of a great line and a fantastic delivery. This is the episode where Ross tries to prove he can flirt. And when Monica insists flirting means nothing. Chandler asks the wrong person for an opinion. And Ross’s painful flirting after is so awkward it’s hilarious.
Monica’s Engagement
I’ve talked about the scene where Monica and Chandler get engaged before. Since these are funniest moments let’s discuss this one, where Rachel is jealous of the whole thing. One of the best jokes ever on the show comes at the end here, at poor Ross’s expense. Of course.
Ross is Batman!
Such a quick moment but always a laugh. In this episode Ross has rented a tux previously worn by Val Kilmer. Chandler is jealous Ross has Batman’s tux, even though he has James Bond’s.
Who Begged First?
Simply one of the best scenes from the series because of the great way it’s structured. Joey mentions his alias is Ken Adams almost as a throwaway joke. Who could have predicted the brilliant callback it would get?
Rachel gives Birth
I’ve mentioned this joke before but man does it make me laugh out loud. Ross picks the worst moment to says that something hurt a lot.
Phoebe’s wedding
There was just something so sweet and well done about Phoebe’s wedding.
And of course….
Saying goodbye is never easy.
Those were my choices, and of course there are dozens that I missed. Let me know if I missed your favorite moment. This show is 25 years old nest month and is still going strong in re-run’s. Let’s finish with the obvious video to end on:
