It’s only fair to go through and discuss some other things that are thirty this year. Aside from The Simpsons and TGIF which I have already discussed. By the way, Family Matter is officially thirty this year.
Saved By The Bell
This is one of those shows that came along at just the right time. It was the absolute perfect age for it, and ate it up with a spoon. It was silly, it was corny..and I loved it. Especially the early years before the show tried to hard to appeal to teens. We all know the premise, it’s basically a show about six high schoolers at Bayside High. Zach, Screech, Slater, Kelly, Jesse, and Lisa were cool and retro all the same time. I still remember the first episode I saw, NBC aired it during a weeknight to tease viewers, and I was a fan ever since.
Batman
This movie gets kinda shafted these days because of the Nolan movies. People don’t realize what an impact this movie made. To be blunt, if you hadn’t had this movie you may never have had the Nolan movies. Before this movie everyone still kinda though of Adam West when they heard Batman. This film changed that (and Frank Miller but I digress). It also gets forgotten the outrage at the idea that Michael Keaton would be the leading role. The guy in Mr.Mom?? No way!! By the way, who remember THAT movie? Anyway not only did Keaton work in the role he was perfect in the role, and some would still say he gave the best movie version of the character we’ve ever seen.
Field of Dreams
“If you build it, he will come”. This is one of those movies that everyone likes at least a little. I don’t care if someone said they hated, they’re lying! Ok ok I’ m getting carried away. Kevin Costner is known for some bad things in his career but this movie was just perfect. It was also my introduction to James Earl Jones. No, not Star Wars or Lion King. This was the movie that made me take notice of how damn coo he is. Listen to that last speech of his in the movie. And bonus, a scene set at Fenway Park..how could I not love this movie??
Star Trek V
Well they can’t all be gems! It’s hard to believe that after Star Trek IV we were all hyped about more Star Trek movies. Then this film came, and it kinds went away. Thank goodness for Star Trek TNG. This movie is watchable, in a bad movie kind of way, which is more than I can say for Insurrection.
Baywatch
Yeah this is one I never got into. I get the appeal, what male can’t? But I need a little more than just lifeguards running up and down a beach to get my attention. I do like David Hasselhoff, and the cast went on to pretty decent csarrers. I mean we all know Pamela Anderson, Erika Eleniak, and Yasmine Bleeth. Right?
The Little Mermaid
As has been discussed by others, this movie was huge for Disney. It came at a time when Disney movies just didn’t seem exciting anymore. Heck when I was growing up Disney movies never did anything for me, aside from the then 40 year old classics. This movie reinvigorated the company and got people exited again. I still love “Under the Sea” and when it’s playing I have to sing along!
Americas Funniest Home Videos
This is the show that set the ball in motion which would eventually give us the reality tv craze we have today. I talked about it once and how I was one of my favorite TV shows ever. Yes I know it’s still on the air, has been almost consecutively for thirty years, but I stopped watching long ago. There was something special about Bob Saget and AFV on Sunday nights for a while which I miss every day.
and of course….
Yep, almost thirty years to the day a little show came on called “The Seinfeld Chronicles”. Who could have ever imagined what that little pilot would become? This show is still a monster. I decided I’ve said more than enough about this show so there was no need for a full 30th anniversary article. Suffice to say, this is probably my all time favorite show and always will be.
Oh and one of my favorite movies ever is thirty this year.I adore thus movie and have watched it a thousand times. You can’t begin to imagine the effect this had on my and my imagination. Which movie is it?
Yup. Is it the best movie every made? Hardly. But I loved it anyway.
And it should be noted that Disney-MGM studios opened that year. And I don’t care how old it makes me sound, I still do and always will call it DISNEY-MGM Studios!
1989 was a special year for me, for reasons that are hard to articulate here. I started high school, and I knew even then that the long road to not being a kid anymore was well underway. It was a special time that I fondly look back with a nostalgic tear in my eye. Especially as I turn 45 at the end of the year. Now I’m sad.
There are plenty of movies and TV I didn’t mention here, so if I left off something you think should have been mentions comment and let me know.
