Top 10 Obnoxious Sitcom Neighbors

So last time I went over nice neighbors. Let's do the opposite of that. These are the neighbors that barge over, interrupt everything, and always overstay their welcome. And we just love them for it!!

#10.The Ochmonek's (Alf)

Trevor and Raquel were typical sitcom neighbors except for one thing. Sure they would barge over and make nuisances of themselves. But they never got suspicious that anything off was happening next door. When they came over Alf had to hide and that was about it. Except that one time Raquel almost saw Alf anyway. They were just, obnoxious, and therefore not very memorable.

#9.Larry Daryl and Daryl (Newhart)

It's kinda forgotten today just how popular these guys were. They were a big part of putting Newhart on the map. I guess if you live in Vermont you're gonna come across strange people. And for that you need look no further than Larry, his brother Daryl and his other brother Daryl.

#8.D'Aarcy's (Married..With Children)

This one is a true trope reversal. Here, the Bundy's were the obnoxious characters while Marcy was as sweet as can be. I guess it's no wonder the Bundy's, Al in particular, hated it whenever Marcy came by. She's at the top because as the series evolved, so did she...to be more like the Bundys

#7.Kimmy Gibbler (Full House)/Harriett Brindle (Small Wonder)

Kimmy wasn't a neighbor at first but eventually she did become the neighbor. I've said it before, I don't think Kimmy was every as annoying as the writers wanted her to be. Ironically I find her more annoying now as an adult. Harriett sort of had it all. She barged over. She lusted over one of the characrers, whether they wanted her to or not. She literally peaked through the families windows. She had to be told when to leave. And despite her constant pestering..she never did catch on to what was going on in that house. But like Kimmy, I dont think she was annoying as the show wanted her to be. Maybe that's why her parents had to appear (or her aunt played by Alice Ghostly after Edie McClurg left).

#6.Newman (Seinfeld)

Yeah this is why Kramer made the other list. Because Newman is a much bigger pest. Every time he comes over Jerry can barely say hello (Hello Newman). Mostly because he knows that nothing good could come of his visits. Newman delights in people's misery and that espcially include the always happy Jerry.

#5.Charlie Dietz (Empty Nest)

Now we're getting it. Charlie was the classic example of a neighbor barging over whenever they wanted. But he also had a large sexual appetite which added a creepy element to him. Kind of like you crossed Kramer with Dan Fielding. Thank goodness David Leisure played him, since he can somehow may slimy come off as charming.

#4.Lenny & Squiggy (Laverne & Shirley)

What can I possibly say about these guys? Why Laverne and Shirley tolerated them for a second is beyond me. I used to love how they always barged over on cue. Though to be fair, Squiggy did say hello as they were barging in. And before people bring up Fonzie on Happy Days, did he really count?

#3.Frank and Marie (Everybody Loves Raymond)

Frank and Marie truly elevate this trope. Not only are they the typical obnoxious neighbors (barging over unannounced, etc), but we have the added bonus of them being Ray's parents! While none of these neighbors are ever tossed out, these are the only two that can't just be thrown out or ignored. And man did they take advantage of that, barging over several times a day. Poor Debra.

#2.Gladys Kravitz (Bewitched)

This is the trend setter as far as I am concerned. She inspired every name on this list. Unlike on Alf where Trevor and Raquel were clueless, Gladys new something funny was going on. Oh sure her husband Abner thought she was nuts, but Gladys new better. And was always peaking through window and trying to barge over to prove she wasn't nuts. Whether it was Alice Pearce or Sandra Ghould (who I preferred), her scenes were always memorable.

#1.Steve Urkel

So what makes Ukel the #1? He's nosy, yes. He barges over without being invited (or even knocking first). He drools over Laura, whether she likes it or not. He never knows when it's time to leave, Carl always has to tell him to go home. But these descriptions cover all the examples on this list. What makes Steve #1? The property damage!! The damage he did on that show is incredible. Why did The Winslow's tolerate it? Two reasons I think. One, he always accepted responsibility (did I do that??) and two, he truly had a heart and was a good person. Eventually Carl and Harriett thought of him like a son, but the show was awful by then.

Well you'd think doing twenty neighbors I'd have covered them all, but there are plenty more I missed. Did I miss your favorite? Comment and let me know.

  1. Actually, Racquel Ochmonek saw Alf in the first episode. He was looking out from the Tanners's bathroom window, just as Racquel was standing by one of hers and Trevor's windows. Racquel then rapported this to the authorities, and it was a close call that Alf was caught already then.

I just adore Steve Urkel (except for that he couldn't get over his stupid obsession with Laura and move on with Myra, but that is for a different discussion somewhere else). Sure, he managed to cause a lot of property damage for the Winslows. That was nothing but accidents though, and he also did a lot of good things for them. Remember, he was even around to re-start Carl's heart after he was electrocuted by a broken lamp!
