Well after the other day it was only fair to look at villains. However, the criteria has to be a little different. As I said before, we love superheroes and their awesome costumes. Villains though aren’t known for their costumes as much. Oh sure there are exceptions, but most of the memorable villains we love to dress up as are from outside comics. Yes Darth Vader, Pennywise, and every Disney villain all make fine costumes but you don’t often see comic book villains.
So here my ten favorite villain designs, where it’s not just the costume which makes him cool but just the way the character was created. You see this person , and you know he or she is trouble! And like last time I’m just going by the look of the character, and nothing else.
#10.Ares
If you’re going to be the god of war, you better look badass! And everything about this guy does makes you realize he is not kidding around. To bad the movie didn’t quite get that right. I almost went with arch foe The Cheetah, who looked goofy in the silver age but was made terrifying later on.
#9.Time Trapper
I have never been the biggest fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, but man did this guy make an impression. He was lived at the end of time and could control it like a child controlling blocks. The design was very “Ghost of Christmas Future” just in purple, but i still really worked.
#8.Darkseid
Give Jack Kirby credit, his creations are still very much around and as popular as ever. Darkseid was just evil incarnate, and his design is perfect for conveying that dark menace.
#7.Deathstroke The Terminator
Yeah I know he could be considered a good guy bit for the most part he isn’t. He is the best there is and the costume is just a perfect representation of that. I like that it’s not over the top, it’s just right.
#6.Catwoman
Catwoman has had tones of designs, some better than others, but I think this is the one that most associate with the character. It’s amazing how she can take purple spandex and make it work. And yes this is one that is often seen as a Halloween costume.
#5.Venom
I talked before about the only Spider-Man, or Marvel for that matter, story I ever read was the Black Suit Saga. And man did I like Venom. What was not to love, he took that black Spider-Man look that didn’t work on Peter Parker and made it into a monster. This guy is so memorable they even gave him his own movie. I was so excited he was going to be in Spider-Man 3. And man, I wish he had been
#4.Lex Luthor
4
There have been many version of Luthor, from the purple jumpsuit in the old days to the business suit he wore after the 80’s relaunch. The one most people remember is the war suit. He had it in the early 80’s but it came back, in a different style, years later.
#3.Dr.Doom
Like with Iron Man, my firs exposure to Dr.Doom was from the action figure I owned. And I just loved it. Just like before I didn’t know who Doom was but taht design just screamed “badass”.
#2.The Joker & Harley Quinn
Remember what I said at the top about comic book villains not making good Halloween costumes? Well, meet the exception. Though to be fair I think the costumes reflect the movies more than their appearances in the comics. Nevertheless, Joker is about as perfect a villain as ever created. Not just because he’s basically the polar opposite of Batman, but because his very appearance is scary. Harley Quinn came along and just fit right in, becoming so popular it’s hard to believe there was a time when she didn’t exist. For a time Joker wore a standard purple suit which I liked, but I’m pretty sure he hasn’t work that in ages.
#1.
Ok this one is gonna take some explaining. Have you ever heard of ..
Who is this? Well this character was an old villain that the All Star Squadron dealt with. He did get a revival years later. He’s a Japanese scientist who assisted the axis in World War 2 devising, among other things, a shield which kept heroes out. Ok so why is he #1? Ages ago when I was first getting into comics I was flipping through the Who’s Who in the DC Universe and just stopped when I saw his look. Even though the villain was passe, and he kinda resembled a green Cobra Commander, I didn’t care. I loved his design. And I guess he isn’t that forgotten since he is slated to appear in the forthcoming “Stargirl” series.
I should do live action costumes one of these days!
