Star Trek TOS Overview (Shore Leave)

There are some episodes that are simply classics. This is one of them.

Plot:The Enterprise crew take shore leave on a planet where their imaginations become reality.

Guest Stars:Emily Banks, Oliver McGowan

Nitpick:In the early days it was a rule that Kirk's shirt had to be ripped, no matter how implausible. This would fades eventually but here we get one of lamest shit rips as it goes from whole to torn in an edit.

Summary:

Teaser-The Enterprise is orbiting an uninhabited planet where the crew is taking shore leave. While Kirk refuses to go, Sulu and McCoy are enjoying the scenery. McCoy comments on how the planet is something out of Alice in Wonderland. Seconds later, he sees a white rabbit followed by an English blonde girl chasing him.

Act 1-McCoy reports to Kirk what he saw, and while Kirk has a laugh he decides it may be worth checking. Especially when Spock tricks Kirk into taking leave. Kirk and Yeoman Barrows beam down and find McCoy. McCoy has found some odd footprints, which cause Kirk to hold the shore parties until it can be checked out. Suddenly a shot rings out, and they find Sulu firing a pistol he found. Kirk takes it and tells the others to fan out to search for the rabbit. As they walk, Kirk reminisces to McCoy about being a cadet and always picked on by one fellow named Finnegan. Suddenly, Finnegan appears. Kirk races after him but Finnegan says nothing. They start to fight when Barrow screams. Kirk races to find out what happened, and she explains she was fantasizing about Don Juan when he appeared. Sulu chased him away after her dress was torn. Kirk goes after him but stops when he spots some flowers, reminding him of an old love. Who suddenly appears.

Act 2-Kirk is entranced when he sees his old love, so much so that he doesn't really think about it at first. He then tells an officer to contact everyone and rendezvous all together where Kirk first beamed down. Spock reports that the sensors are detecting a power field which is affecting the ship, under the planet's surface. McCoy and Barrows discover a fairy tale dress just...there. McCoy encourages her to wear it. While two officers are cornered by an angry tiger, Barrows is wearing the dress. Spock reports that the affect from the planet is getting worst, and Kirk finally finds Sulu. He reports that Samurai was chasing him. Suddenly Spock transports down, reporting that the transporter is useless now. McCoy comments that Barrows shouldn't be afraid with a brave knight to protect her, and then one appears. McCoy is convinced these things they have seen are hallucinations and cannot hurt them. And allowed the knight to pierce him in the heart, apparently killing him. Kirk shoots the knight down, and rushes to McCoy's side to late.

Act 3-Now convinced that these things are painfully real. Spock's readings indicate that all the surroundings, including people, are all manufactured items made from the same material. They are distracted by WW II bomber plane, and when they look back McCoy's body has vanished. Spock is formulating a theory and asks what Kirk was thinking when he saw the people he saw. Kirk recalls thinking of Finnegan, when he re-appears. Kirk chases after him and we get... probably the longest fight scene in the entire series.

Act 4-When it finally, and I mean finally, ends with Kirk knocking the stuffing out of Finnegan something he always wanted to do. Spock confirms his theory. They are seeing things that the happen to be thinking about at he time. Somehow there thoughts are read, and these things are quickly manufactured and provided. Which can be dangerous if not careful. Kirk and Spock return to the others and Kirk demands they remain at attention. Just then an old man appears, and says he is the Caretaker. He explains that they just realized that the crew did not understand how this amusement planet worked. Kirk says that doesn't explain McCoy's death, when McCoy appears saying he didn't die. They fixed him up down below. The Caretaker says the planet would be perfect for shore leave as long as the crew are careful. Kirk agrees and when his old flame reappears he decides to stay for a little while.

Final Thoughts:It's a fun little episode what more can I say? This is a story where a man from the 23rd century uses a 20th century pistol to shoot a 10th century black knight. I love Star Trek.
