So here are my favorites as a tribute to him, shame on me for not recognizing him sooner.
He was famously more of a Marvel guy but as always this will be focused on his dc work but id be remiss if I didn’t point out his most influential work:
Yup one of the most iconic and memorable comic book stories ever was when Gwen Stacey was killed by the Green Goblin. It’s been referenced and homaged to this day. I should also mention Conway co created The Punisher.
I had this issue once and it was pretty good. Conway had a run on All Star Comics I never got into.
Let's talk about this crazy run. This was supposed to another team to book just with different heroes. I can get behind that, but it never really took off. This story arc involved Aron’s wife being kidnapped by aliens or something. It’s fun to see the united team ups but the story is….wow. These stories also involve The Secret Society of Super Villains which he created.
Conway did a ton of Superman stories but I am highlighting this issue because it features Zatanna. While Conway didn’t create her did flesh her out in the 70s and 80s even writing a special which I never read.
I absolutely loved his run on Firestorm. Before John Ostrander ruined the character. This was the hero I loved and could totally relate to the teenage struggles of Ronnie Raymond. This issue shows the origin from Martin Steins point of view and it’s one of my favorite stories ever.
Conway had a tremendous run on Batman, Brave and the Bold and Detective with this issue being his crown jewel. This issue simultaneously makes Killer Croc one of Batman’s biggest baddies, united almost all of the villains in one issue, and officially introduces Jason Todd as Robin. The sad part is that this story has either been retconned or redone since but that doesn’t take away from this being one of the best Batman stories ever written.
This issue is just brilliance. The very first DC/Marvel crossover and it’s a wonderful story. It set the standard for all crossovers to come after it. He also did a massive Superman/Wonder Woman crossover i didn’t like as much.
This issue is sheer brilliance. I can't rave about it enough. Truth be told this whole article could have been just issues of JLA, I loved so many of his stories. But this was the topper. It is the quintessential example of how to do a 200th issue (looking at you Avengers 200). It double size, has wonderful artists, and the story is a wonderful callback to the old days. Phenomenal.
And as long as we’re takin about JLA I should mention this…
Yes for better or worse Conway gave us the revised JLA Detroit era. Now we know why Steel and Zatanna were included. We also had Vixen (guess who created her? You guessed it!). Of course Vibe and Gypsy rounded out the new crew which were…eh. There was a lot heart but it never really took off. But we did get this issue at least..
I didn’t even mention Wonder Woman, legion of superheroes and countless others. The man was a true legend.
