Five Silly Promotional DC Comics

I talked about PSA comics the other day but there is another genre I should mention. When the comic is a straight up ad comic. At least PSA's have their hearts in the right place, trying to educate and inform. When the comic is using a hero or heroes for a straight up, blatant advertisement things get silly. Especially when the hero has to play the fool in order to make the product look superior. Marvel has a load of these promoting everything from the NFL to Hitachi Data Systems (I don't get that either). But DC has done its fair share of shilling to and are five examples.

Superman Meets the Quick Bunny

You know, at least with the Kool-Aid Man Marvel was smart enough to give the character its own world to inhabit. They didn't try to force him to work with Captain America or something (nah they saved that for there orange juice psa). Here, Superman meets the Quick Bunny and the entire "Quick" Club. The story is just silly and it's funny to see Superman maintain his dignity as he is being upstaged by four kids and an anthropomorphic rabbit.

Batman for Onstar

This one is a small example but still a silly one. I guess from Onstar's point of view this makes sense, I mean Batman dies use the Batmobile. The problem is that the car already has features in it and the idea Batman would need to call some customer service rep for assistance is laughable.

Superman and the Tandy Computer Wiz Kids

Yeah you knew this one was coming. The Wiz Kids were a promotional tool from Radio Shack, and there were a few comics which involved these kids solving major crimes with a Tandy product. In three stories, they teamed up with Superman. And again, the computer has to save the day when Superman is unable to. Well, ok the Supergirl one isn't so bad but the one where the computer has to step in to do calculations that Superman can't is downright silly.

Energu and Safety with the Justice League

There is a jla anti-smoking comic called “No Smoke Without Fire” which is really lame. But at least it tried to have a story! This one was produced with Con Ed and basically has the JLA'ers standing around giving people safety tips. Why use the Justice league if you’re not going to do anything with them?

Batman for Claritin

Ya know, maybe I should have been easier on the Onstar comics. Though to be fair, the comic is CLEARLY intended for kids going by the art work. Not that these aren't all intended for kids, heck the Quick bunny one even includes games for them to play. And hey, at least they didn't give an anthropomorphic pill or something. It's just that Robin needs to take Claritin to fight Poison Ivy. Ok I guess the Onstar one is still the lamer one.

There are more out there, I'm sure! I didn't even mention movie adaptations, and even shilling for politics. Recently we had comics encouraging kids to wear masks due to the threat of covid.
