Star Trek TOS Overview (The Galileo Seven)

I wonder if creators were realizing at this point that Spock was quickly becoming a favorite because here he goes from not doing much over the past few episodes to being the sole focus.

Plot:Spock faces difficult command decisions when his shuttle crashes on a hostile world populated by barbarous giants.

Guest Stars:Don Marshall as Boma

Nitpick:I've talked before about how infuriating Boma is with his insubordination here. Like him or hate, Spock is still your commanding officer dumbass! And Ferris is one of the dumbest characters ever, why did we need him here again? To remind us there's a ticking clock? Uhura chiming in or something would have been sufficient.

Summary:

Teaser-The Enterprise is at the Murasaki Quasar doing research en route to delivering medical supplies. The delivery being supervised by a visiting high commissioner Ferris. Kirk launches shuttlecraft Galileo which includes Spock, McCoy and others however the shuttle is pulled into the quasar, and crashes on a planet.

Act 1-The area of the quaser is immense, especially with the instruments not not working. And they only a few days before they have to leave. Kirk is determined to find them. On the planet, the shuttle is whole and the crew shaken but whole. As McCoy tends to the injured Scotty starts to work to fix the shuttle. McCoy points out that Spock finally has his big chance at command. Scotty reports that situation is grim, they have almost no fuel, and may need to lighten their weight. By leaving three men behind. Meanwhile two crewmen are searching when they are suddenly attacked by strange creatures. They appear to be huge, and kill one of the men. The scream alerts Spock and Boma who go to find out what happened.

Act 2-Spock and Boma arrive to find one man dead. Boma is upset Spock isn't more upset at the dead crewmen, which is ridiculous what commander would show emotion here? Of course they would stay strong. On the Enterprise the search continues. Ferris reminds us that he's in the episode and reminds Kirk he is running out of time. As Spock and Scotty work on the ship Boma expects Spock to drop what he's doing for a funeral. Um, time is of the essence dude. Spock comes up with the idea of using their phasers to fuel the ship. Outside, the crew can hear the sounds of weapons being sharpened in the distance. The officer suggest attack first, but Spock chooses a more defensive position to show their strength to scare them off. Spock assumes his gambit worked, and leaves an officer behind to guard. The officer is quickly killed.

Act 3-Spock, McCoy and Boma found that the second man has died. Of course Boma wants him to be sad about it, I hate this guy. Has he never heard of Vulcans? Anyway Spock is socked that his gambit didn't work, that the creatures didn't scare off. McCoy asks why it didn't occur to him that they might react emotionally, with anger. soon the shuttle is being attacked by a creature but Spock comes up with an idea. Scotty electrifies the ships so the creature is scared away. Time is running out on the Enterprise when a report comes in from a search party about the savage creatures on the planet. Boma finally crosses the line in his comments, Scotty and McCoy even yell at him, but Spock reminds them they don't have time for this. At last the Enterprise is forced to abandon the search, and leave the planet.

Act 4-As the search parties return to the ship, Kirk prepares to leave the planet. Spock, McCoy and Boma are attacked by the creatures and manage to get back to the ship and lift off. As the Enterprise is slowly pulling away. The shuttle achieves orbit but may not be able to maintain long. In a desperate gamble, Spock ignites the fuel and sends up a flare. Just in time, the Enterprise see and rescues them. Later the crew tease Spock on why he did an emotional act but he refuses to admit he did.

Final Thoughts:The whole hatred at Spock baffles me, if it had been Kirk instead would have been a lot different? But this episode is a good character piece for Spock as he learns not everything can be solved with logic. The episode also does a good job have giving everyone something to do, even Sulu on the Bridge. This is the first time the crew we know and love feels together and whole (Sulu hasn't appeared in the last few episodes, and Scotty was barely in Balance of Terror). As I've noted before it would take a bit for the creators to realize we like seeing the other main characters every episode also.
