There’s a strange cliche in sitcoms which really makes no sense. You have family friendly shows aimed for audiences including children. And yet will get characters who are always, well, horny! I don’t mean that they are interested dating or companionship, I mean that they simply want sex. And they want it all the time! These characters are often crass and rude…and we love them! Seriously every character on this list is a fan favorite from the various show’s. Why is that? Probably because these characters have a real zest for life and an energy that is infectious. And since it’s TV we don’t really believe they’ve have had as many dates as they claim they do. Either way, these are often the characters that are the most popular and loved.
Course not every show gets it right, like Kirk from “Dear John”. He was the typical sleazy character but sadly as hard as Jere Burns tried the character never really developed. There’s also Married..With Children’s Peg Bundy who I think was more starved for attention than she was horny. But most often shows will get it right and give us beloved characters who always had three little letters on their minds. Here are ten examples :
#10.Fonzie
You may be surprised I put him so high given his affection for the ladies. Not to mention their affection for him. I mean, who else can have women line up at the snap of their fingers? But Happy Days was on in a simpler time so any sex Fonz had was implied, at the most! But it was clear he loved the ladies so it was only fair to mention him here. Henry Winkler made this character an icon. And he did manage at least one serious relationship in the series. By the way Laverne from Laverne and Shirley could almost count here but just like Fonzie, it always implied.
#9.Mrs.Roper
Audra Lindley was adorable but the character was kind of annoying. I mean, if she had such an overactive sex drive why was she with Stanley at all? He clearly was never interested.
#8.Barney Stinson
While not a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother I am aware of Neil Patrick Harris’s character. The thing for me, and forgive me if I am wrong, is that he seems more talk than action. Suee he has rules and strategies for getting the babes, but how often does that work on the series? He also outgrew his womanizing ways as the series went on.
#7.Ray Barone
Ray is horny should have been the name of “Everybody Loves Raymond” because good lord was this guy always thinking about sex. The big difference between him and the others here, aside from Mrs.Roper, is that he was married. And his horniness got just plain ridiculous at times. At least with Mrs.Roper, Stanley wasn’t giving her any attention. Debra gave Ray attention but all that seemed to was make him drool even more. I never understood how he could THAT horny!
#6.Dan Fielding
Dan was a real womanizer, he didn’t care who it was or where it was as long a woman was there. But the reason we loved it is because unlike most of these others, Dan was very often punished for his actions. He was slapped several times and had many other humiliations in Night Court. John Larroquette has a way of making a total jerk come off lovable. So lovable that audiences cheered for his antics, even though they were sexist to say the least!
#5.Mona Robinson
Quite a coincidence I decide to do this today of all days, as news broke that Katherine Helmond passed away. Some loved her on Soap. Others loved her in the Cars movies. Others remember her from appearances in Coach, Everybody Loves Raymond and the movie Brazil. But for me, she will always be Mona Robinson on Who’s The Boss?. Mona was a grandmother but that didn’t stop her from getting out and having fun. She was such a fun character Helmond was nominated for an Emmy twice. Since most of her activities were off screen it was easy to just have fun with it. But despite her bed hopping antics she was a good mother, grandmother, and friend. She was such a good character she almost got a spin-off, but that’s another story.
#4.Charlie Harper
As you know I was not a fan of Two and a Half Men so forgive me for not getting into much detail. Charlie is is the quintessential bachelor, and enjoys every minute of it. I don’t think with Charlie it was so much he was horny, but just that he loved his lifestyle and lived it to the fullest. He was always running around with someone while his brother, who was the opposite of him, just kind of watched.
#3.Blanche Deveroux
Darn, just remembered Sue Ann on Mary Tyler Moore. But honestly, she was annoying the way she drooled over Lou. Blanche on The Golden Girls was like Sue Ann but the charm was dialed up, 100%. I always wondered what would have happened if Mona and Blanche ever met. The two have the same voracious appetite for men. But Blanche has something Mona does not. That is her Atlanta charm. Rue McLanahan played it up so much that the character was irresistible, and we could understand how so many many men would be drawn to her. She did have a good heart and was a decent person inside, and in fact had troubles and problems like anyone else. In fact her whole personality was really a mask for deep insecurities she had, even pretending to be 40 rather than her actual age. But was fun to watch and it also helped that the other three girls never missed a dig at her loose and casual lifestyle.
#2.Joey Tribianni
What can I say about Joey? He was supposed to be the jerk of the group, but Matt Le Blanc gave him so much heart that he ended being one of the best characters. He was a great friend and cared for people. Even if he was a bit dim. He also had his fair share of the ladies, according to him more than most people’s fair share of the ladies. But Joey gets credit for growing up a little on the show, ok not that much but a little. But the fact that he wasn’t a blatant womanizer gives him some points, yeah he liked scoring with the chicks but that wasn’t all he was into. He seemed to really enjoy their company also, and most of his more dirtbag qualities were the one’s which were mentioned as a joke or in passing. His on screen relationships were almost always more than just a “one night stand”
#1.Sam Malone
So what makes Sam the #1 here in my opinion? Sam has one thing that the others all lack. Class. Ted Danson did such an great job with this character. Yeah he chased after women like it was a sport, but he did in such a way that we didn’t think of him as a lech like some of the others listed here. He seemed to respect women, and never went to far if one wasn’t interested. Of course he also had a long term relationship with Diane which while tumultuous showed that there was a desire for more than just skirt chasing. This would be followed up on when he tried having a kid with Rebecca, but they were never in love. Sam tended to get in his own way most of the time, but the other patrons of Cheers looked up to him and with good reason. No one lived like Sam Malone did.
Did I miss your favorite? Comment and let me know.
