I
was looking back at my Christmas articles and I found a very old one
where I discussed my favorite Christmas ads. I considered re-publishing
it like I did a few times with other articles this year, but really it’s
fine. So instead I will focus on one specific area I haven’t given
enough love to.
I love Coke, and drink way to much of it. And in fact, Coca Cola is almost synonymous with Christmas. And I don’t just mean because it’s available in stores every year. In fact, it was the early ads for Coke that featured Santa Claus which helped to define the look that we all love today. From 1931-1964, Haddon Sundblom took inspiration from a certain Clement Moore poem to give us the first official ads with Santa. So with this connection, is it any wonder coca-cola always has memorable Christmas ads every year?
Rather than go through the history of the print ads, because you can find that elsewhere on the internet, let’s go through some of the great and memorable TV ads we’ve had over the years. And let’s get the obvious one out of the way first:
This is one of those ads that is more than just a memorable Christmas commercial. It’s one of the most famous commercials ever made.
This one from 2001 is a favorite because of how it tries to homage those classic 1930′ print ads
Now here is a true classic from the late 80’s, with Art Carney making a little Christmas magic for Brian Bonsall
I love this little live action ad from 1992
Ok there’s no Santa here we have to remember the classic coca-cola polar bears!
Here’s one a little more recent
This is one from 2000, and a little more conventional than others here.
Here’s another one and I think I’m missing the joke here, why the Home Alone music?
So you may be wondering, did Coke have ads before 1970? Well of course….
oh and they also sponsored TV shows (because that’s how advertisers worked back then) and in the original broadcast of Charlie Brown Christmas, two ads for the product have been cut from all re-runs in the last fifty years. That is why the song a the end trails off and never gets finished and why we never see where Linus lands in the beginning when Snoopy flings him and Charlie Brown. Don’t believe me?
Mind blown??
And finally, the holiday’s are coming!!!

I love old Christmas commercials, there is just something so sentimental about them. Thye are almost as much a part of Christmas any movie, TV show or song we can’t miss every year. Maybe I’ll be back to cover more of these before the month is out.
