Superman supporting characters aren’t quite as lush as the Batman one’s, so this list was a little harder. But after 80 years Superman has managed a decent array of supporting characters. Like last time, no villains and no colleagues that weren’t originated in the Superman books (like Wonder Woman, etc).
#10.Jor-El
This one may seem kind of strange, kind of like putting Thomas Wayne on the Batman list. But over the years Jor-El has made lots of appearances and of course we’ve seen lots of flashbacks expalinin who this guy was and why he sent his only son to Earth as his planet exploded.
#9.Power Girl
I put her high for the same reason Huntress was high on the other list. Because her connection to the Superman family hasn’t always been consistent. She was the cousin of Earth-2’s Superman before the Crisis. And it took 20 years for creators to decide to return her to that distinction. I was going to say no alternate version of characters, but here is why I did not say that since this technically an alternate version of Supergirl.
#8.Emil Hamilton
Ok this is kind of a cheat since Hamilton kinda went back and forth on being a bad guy. But for awhile he was one of Superman’s trusted adviser and his tech guy.
#7.Ma & Pa Kent
I know a lot of people prefer to have Pa Kent deceased. They say that losing his father is one of the key moments in Clark Kent’s life that helped him define who he would become. Fair enough, but I preferred having both Ma & Pa around as a way for Clark to have some to talk too especially in the days before Lois knew his secret.
#6.Cat Grant
This was the new character that came around when Byrne rebooted Superman in the 80’s. And at first, she wasn’t much. All she did was flirt with Clark. But as time went on they gave her a backstory, a son to take care of, and she even became a decent reporter.
#5.Maggie Sawyer
Some may call foul on this one but she was a Superman regular before moving over to Gotham City. She the captain of the Special Crimes Unit and was no nonsense and awesome. She commanded a ton of respect, and her sexual orientation was unique for comics in the 80s.
#4.Steel
The Death of Superman arc gave us four new characters claiming to be Superman. The robot one who turned out to evil. The Eradicator one. The Superman clone called Superboy (who would later be called Kon-El and Connor Kent and I have no idea how that happened, I didn’t care either way). And of course, John Henry Irons. Steel was an awesome character who became Superman’s tech advisor later on.
#3.Perry White
I always wished Perry got more things to do in the comics. To be fair it was always the screen actors who really gave life to this character. Maybe this changed after I stopped reading, but he never seemed to do more than be there to drive the plot. But even if he didn’t appear enough, he was a true newspaper editor who loved his city and The Daily Planet.
#2.Supergirl
Yeah the first question is, which one?? The classic version named Kara killed in Crisis? The matrix version I am more familiar with? How about the Earth born angel who became Linda Danvers? Or the future version claiming to be Clark and Lois’s daughter? I guess they all have their pro’s and con’s so let’s just say whichever version it is, it’s always Supergirl.
#1.Lois Lane
Yeah while the Batman list it was kind of up in the air who I would rank #1, this one is pretty obvious. Though I should put a qualifier here. I never cared about Lois when she was just the “damsel in distress”. But when she learned Clark’s secret, and married him, she became a confidant for Superman and I loved that dynamic of their relationship.
