Well,
they can’t all be gems. Yeah I’ve talked about great Thanksgiving
episodes, but of course there are plenty of stupid one’s. I already
mentioned a couple when I discussed Roseanne, Frasier, and Home
Improvement but are there any more? Sure.
Here are five Thanksgiving episodes which I just found lame. And of course this is all opinion, if you like these episodes than that’s cool.
Family Ties, “No Nukes Is Good Nukes”
I know people will disagree with me on this one so let’s get it out of the way. Oh season one Family Ties, why did you have to be so lame? This is a sensitive one but it rubs me the wrong way. It’s Family Ties at the Keaton’s so what are Steven and Elyse planning to do? They’re planning to protest at an anti-nuclear weapons rally. In 1982. Ok ok the Cold War was alive and well and the two are doing what they have every right to do, but why on Thanksgiving? Course they get arrested, just Will and Uncle Phil on “Fresh Prince”. Thought at least this was for a cause, a lot the “A Different World” episode with a similar setup but there the cause was topical and the arrests a pure accident. Of course the family shows up at the prison with Thanksgiving dinner, like on that Christmas episode of Step by Step. Hmmm. Maybe that’s my real issue with this episode, not the politics but the fact the plot is so damn cliched!
Head of the Class, “Cold Turkey”
Just a dumb episode. You may notice there aren’t many episodes of this series focused on Charlie. It’s usually the students. And this episode is prime example why! Charlie has nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. After embarrassing himself at a student’s house he ends up in a diner with Dr.Samuels. Which is just lame.
Perfect Strangers, “Wild Turkey”
It’s a sitcom cliche to have someone cook food and lose and item of jewelry in said food. It happened on Friends, twice, 2 Broke Girls and yes even this show did it. Well that’s the plot here when Larry and Balki cater a families Thanksgiving, and then Larry can’t find his wife’s ring. The solution is to basically ruin the families dinner in their search for the ring. This cliche is stupid but here it’s infuriating. And, shocker, it was never in the food at all, because asking Jennifer first would have been just silly!
Mad About You, “The Thanksgiving Show”
So you know how I’ve talked about how awful this show was in its final two year’s? Man is this episode painful. This series had three Thanksgiving episodes prior and all were great, one a classic. Here Paul and Jamie get in to a fight over a game of charade’s. Need I go on? UGH. The whole second act is staged to music or something (I don’t feel like watching it again) and the episode just ends with the two mad at each other about the how the stupid game went.
How I Met Your Mother, “Slapsgiving”
What can I possibly say? I am not a huge fan of this series. I’ve seen some it and it was good. But I am pretty sure I would still hate this episode even if I love the show. When is assault and or abuse ever funny? Yeah yeah I know what people are saying. I take things to seriously. It’s just a funny show. The show is told from flashback so it may not even be accurate. It’s a wager among friends and it’s sort of like a drinking game, just slapping instead. The heart is still there. I get all of that. It’s stupid, not funny, and I hate it.
How about you guys? Any Thanksgiving episode that just rubs you the wrong way? Comment and let me know.
