Well here we are now less than two weeks from Halloween, time for a Halloween article or two. Before zombies and vampires, ghosts were the huge thing. Ghosts are always fascinating because they don’t have to be evil or mean. Heck, they can be normal people who just can’t leave the Earth. On the other hand they can be nasty creatures who seek to torment you. Here are five of my favorite ghosts from movies.
#5.Jacob Marley
Yeah I feel funny about this one, to me this is a Christmas story. But you can’t deny the supernatural element. I mean, they are called the ghosts of Christmas! So I guess it counts. Jacob Marley is singled out because, no matter what version it is, he is always the quintessential ghost. He is a ghastly site with his chains and does what any good ghost should–scare the crap out of Scrooge!
#4.Casper
Ok he was a cartoon first but he’s been in a few movies so he counts. Casper is the friendly ghost..and I was never really been a big fan. The problem with him being so nice and kind is he’s not much of a character. He needs other ghosts around him to be interesting, because bu himself he’s kinda dull. I saw his first movie and it wasn’t bad.
#3.Sam Wheat
Ok ok maybe this shouldn’t count, but you know I kind of liked the afterlife presented in “Ghost”. It felt, well, real. Like this is what happened to spirits after death when they have some unresolved issue on Earth. Which is what a ghost traditionally is. If you don’t know, Sam is shot and killed and it’s up to his ghost to find out who did it and to prospect his wife. He does through the help of a psychic played by Whoopi Goldberg in her Academy Award winning role. It’s a nice movie which has kind of been forgotten over the years.
#2.Slimer
Casper is petty famous but Slimer really gave him a run for his money. Pretty cool for a character who is pretty disgusting. The way he eat and slimes people. But he went from being a no name gag in the first Ghostbuster movie to top billing on The Real Ghostbusters carton show (for better or for worst). And of course he had a larger (and more pointless) role in the second movie. Was he in he reboot? I dunno. The green blob is a great example of a stripped down protoplasmic lifeform. And I’m a fan.
#1.Beetlejuice
I mean, who else? He is the ghost with the most after all. What can you say about this guy? He is just so crazy and full of energy. He’s the kind of guy you’d want to hang with. The only problem is that he can be pretty mean when he wants something, and will do whatever he can to get it. That’s when you have to watch out. Say his name three times and get ready for a strange trip. This is the kind of movie I should hate, but Michael Keaton is just irresistible in this role.
So comment and let me know your favorite. And I know, no horror movies. I don’t do those guys. So feel free to let me know what I’ve been missing below.
