Last month I talked about awful Season 1 theme songs I mentioned how Charlotte Rea sang the Facts of Life theme that first year, badly. Thankfully that one was re-recorded but a lot of other theme songs are sung by the stars and the song does work and even becomes iconic.
Here are my ten favorite theme songs sung by the stars of the show themselves.
#10.Frasier
I’ve complained how annoying the lyrics are to this but outing that aside it’s always fun to hear Kelsey Grammar’s bouncy rendition of this theme.
#9.My Two Dads
Most don’t remember this show, and I don’t blame them for that, but it wasn’t that bad really. Greg Evigan starred and of course sang the theme song. And it’s sung pretty darn well, for a silly so like this anyway.
#8.That’s So Raven
I needed something a little more current, and settled on this one. I did see one episode and it was pretty good. It’s always funny seeing Raven Symone all grown up, she’ll always be little Olivia to me.
#7.227
Never thought of Marla Gibbs as a singer, because she really isn’t, but she wrote and sang the song for this little show which really wasn’t bad at all.
#6.Gimme A Break/Alice
If you’re going to have a Broadway star in your show, they’re gonna sing the damn theme song! I spoke before about how awful the first theme to Gimme a Break! was. Thankfully it was redone. The new theme had a much better melody and complimented Nell Carter’s beautiful voice. As for “Alice”, Linda Lavin was a Broadway pro so she had to sing something!
#5.All in the Family
This is a case of something which shou;d have failed miserably, really working! I think it works on two levels. One is how adorable Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton are. That’s obvious. The other is the simple lyrics about longing for the simpler days when we were young. The Simpsons did a more up to date version of this sog and it was awesome.
#4.Green Acres
This song is just so cute and memorable. In fact it’s so memorable that it’s often stuck in my head even though I’ve hardly ever seen the show. Give Edie Albert and Eva Gabor some credit for this great piece.
#3.The Brady Bunch
Yeah yeah I know, like you didn’t know this was coming? I’ve probably talked to much abut this show but the theme song is just fantastic. After they dumped that awful season 1 version The Brady Kids sang it and gave a song so memorable that EVERYONE knows the story of the lovely lady.
#2.Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Well, duh! This theme is really amazing in how much it accomplishes. It’s a good memorable song, it sets the tone, it tells the backstory of the show, and even gives us a taste of what our main character is like. It’s hard to call it “perfect”, but man it’s close.
#1.The Muppet Show
Is this a cheat? I don’t care. This theme is awesome! The Muppet Show was just amazing and it all kicks off this with this opening number which is just fantastic. By the way did you know there was a different opening for the first season? Yeah it was the same melody but some of the lyrics were different. It was clunkier and kinda lame. Here is the familiar, and fondly remembered, version.
Yeah I missed a few. I never watched Reba but I’m sure the theme is fine. And I decided Duke of Hazard didn’t count since Waylon Jennings played the narrator not a character on the show. And if you’re wondering why I didn’t mention “Joanie Loves Chachi” well, have you heard that snore fest??
Did I miss your favorite? Comment and let me know.
