Top 6 Favorite Scores from Danny Elfman
So
my look at movie composers continues with Danny Elfman. He’s done a
bunch of movie and TV work, of course a lot of it was for Tim Burton.
Course the big question you probably have is, why only 6??? I really
couldn’t find 4 more??? Honestly I am not the biggest fan of his stuff.
It just sounds so repetitive, and unlike the other composers I discussed
the movies that I’ve seen that he worked on is not long. Not to
diminish his amazing talent or wide range of work.
But I do like some of it, so here we go :
#6.Mission:Impossible
How do you take a catchy yet bland TV theme and make it rock? Ask
Danny Elfman who turned that simple theme into this metal tune. The
movie was awful and confusing, but damn that theme rocks!!
#5.Edward Scissorhands
The amazing thing is that I have seen this movie only once but I
never forgot it. It’s the one Johnny Depp performance I actually liked,
and it’s a bit underrated but really good. And of course you have that
haunting music that always stayed with me. Just wonderful.
#4.Scrooged
This offbeat and dark film gets a the perfect score thanks to Elfman.
His music really sets the mood for this film which I really shouldn’t
love. And yet I do. I talked about this elsewhere who let’s just leave
it at that. One of Bill Murray’s best movies.
#3.Beetlejuice
This is such a great theme, to bad it sounds like so much of his
other music. This film came around before people really knew what to
think of Tim Burton. As a result it totally took people by surprise,
making a mega star out of Michael Keaton who was fantastic. Of course it
all started with that cooky music.
#2.Spider-Man
One feature of the Raimi movies that gets overlooked is the awesome
theme music. Ok it’s not the best super-hero music out there but I
always loved it. I actually liked the Raimi Spider-Man movie, flaws and
all, and that’s really a subject I should discuss elsewhere. But of
course as good as this superhero theme is, Elfman has an even better
one….
#1.Batman
A lot missing from here like Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and Dick Tracy
which sounds eerily reminiscent of his Batman score. Speaking of which
how about that Batman score? What else can I say but that it is just
awesome! This isn’t #1 by accident, I loved this music. Not only does it
fit the movie perfectly, but it’s a fantastic orchestration. The the
long wait to that final build up is just awesome!! And yes I know he used it in Justice League, which had pretty bland music I thought.
And like the last times, here is a TV theme he is very famous for making. I actually love this theme!
Finally, back in the 90’s Elfman gave us this awesome theme to the
short lived Flash TV show. The show was a rip off the Burton Batman
movies so why not rop off the theme also….
I did see Men In Black but not a fan of the music. And the rest I
either have no knowledge of or it’s, well, repetitive. I’m sure I upset
all of you but not showcasing more of his work, so please feel free to
comment and let me know what I’m missing.
Is there another composer out there you’d like me to cover? Let me know who’s out there I haven’t mentioned yet.
