There are some rules you have to follow to make a super hero movie. One of them is, the first time we see our hero has to be the most badass moment ever! They can be suiting up for the first time or already in action, but it has to be something which gets our attention and makes us roar.
Some fail at this, like Steel because the suit looked to silly. Or in Green Lantern when Hal Jordan finally becomes the hero in an admittedly strong scene…only to turn back to Hal and go out with his girlfriend (what was that about?). And sadly The Hulk transformation scenes are ruined by the lame CGI they used, I prefer the original TV version of how Banner transformed.
But when it works, it gives us a scene that defines our hero and makes us scream “Oh hell yes!”. Now I am not talking about the opening scenes of the movies (though I am for at least one) but the scene where we first finally get to see our hero, in all their glory!
Here are what I think are ten of the best, in no particular order.
Superman
One scene from the first movie I always loved was when we first see Superman, in costume and flying to save Lois Lane. Her reaction was always a big laugh “You’ve got me? Whose got you!!”. This is the scene that made everyone say “Yes this really is Superman!!”
So what about “Man of Steel?” Well to be honest one of the scene’s I really liked in that movie is the one where Kal finally wears the suit. I’d love it except for that ridiculous way it was filmed.
Batman
I’m gonna get roasted for this but I barely remember when we first saw Batman in the Nolan movies. I always hated that stupid costume and annoying voice. Nit that the movies are bad, far from it, but for me Keaton nailed it in the original Batman and his first scene is so good it’s almost iconic! The other three classic movies had decent suiting up scenes but this is the one we all remember.
Batman Begins pretty much played it safe, even using the same line as Keaton, and it was good but not as good.
Wonder Woman
This was the scene that made movie goers say “yeah, this is pretty bad ass!”. I don’t think it’s literally the first time we see her in the costume but it’s the first time we see her in action in it. And wow! This is the Wonder Woman we have always wanted to see.
Iron Man
I talked before about how much I loved Iron Man as a kid, despite not really knowing the real backstory of him. The suit was awesome and the suit up sequences in the movies were always amazing.
Spider-Man
Here is our first time seeing Spider-Man from “The Amazing Spider-Man”
There really isn’t a great scene of Spider-Man suiting up in the Raimi movies. We get a montage in the first movie and then..that’s it. I decided to include this one becauee it was as close as we’d get. This isn’t the reveal of Spider-Man as much as it is Black Spider-Man from Spider-Man 3.
Ghost Rider
This movie has problems. Many, many problems. But that scene where we see Ghost Rider for the first time isn’t one of them.
The Avengers
Ok ok this is a cheat. This scene, heck this movie, isn’t our introduction to most of these characters. But the director knew they needed one moment to show that The Avengers were together and, well, assembled. And from a person was never was a real Avengers fan, this scene totally rocked!! Between the music and that last shot of the team assembled…loved it.
Course the villains usually have first scenes just as strong, if not more strong, than our heroes. It makes sense since this is the first time we are seeing these villains we have always wanted to see come to life. They have to make an impression right away. Guess it’d only be fair to discuss those next time. Until then comment and let me know what I missed that should be here.
