I haven’t talked about Disney in awhile. And as I look through my previous stuff I realize I haven’t discussed Disney music nearly enough. Music from Disney movies is always something special. They always go that extra mile so not only is the song fitting in the movie but it so well done that it tanscens the movie and is just a massive hit. In 1995 I heard “Color of the Wind” constantly on the radio. And is there anybody who can’t sing along to “A Spoonful of Sugar”? And the villain songs are even better, but that’s another article.
However while many songs do become beloved and popular, some do not. Oh sure, people love them but they tend to gi under the radar when discussing Disney songs even though they are just as great as the big one’s. No normally when I do these kind of lists the idea is examples which most people don’t know. But let’s be honest here. If you’re even a passive Disney fan chances are you’ve come across these. So I wont act like I am the first to discover these or anything, these are just songs I love that I don’t think get the attention they deserve. They didn’t win the academy awards and they aren’t the first song people associate with the movies. But they’re awesome nonetheless.
Candle on the Water from “Pete’s Dragon”.
I don’t have much to say about this movie. It was just another feeble attempt to blend live action and animation. Why did it take so long for Disney to realize that just throwing cartoons into a live action movie isn’t going to make the movie good? That being said, this song is simply beautiful. I called it underrated but it was a maginal hit. It was nominated for best song but lost. And Helen Reddy’s recording of reach #27 on the charts. Never heard of it? Take a listen.
Everybody Wants To Be A Cat from “The Aristocats”
I got nothing, I mean NOTHING, good to say about this movie. The movie is just so bland and forgettable. It’s about cats right? Anyway as true as that may be you can’t ignore this adorable little tune. It will never leave!
Why Should I Worry from “Oliver and Company”
Is this one underrated? I always loved so I guess I always thought it wasn’t considered an underrated song. But I see it on other lists, so ok. Billy Joel knocks this one out of the park and even if you hate New York City you gotta smile.
I Just Can’t Wait to be King from “The Lion King”
This was always a favorite of mine even though it isn’t the most familiar song from he movie. Circle of Life, Be Prepared, and even Can You Feel the Love Tonight are all much better and more familiar tunes. But something about this one just makes me love it, and I really have no idea what that is.
When She Loved me “Toy Story 2”
I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this yet. I can’t say enough about this one. I have never see a more perfect song come in at a more perfect time in any movie. It will literally make you cry. This is the scene where we get Jessie’s backstory and man, is it heartbreaking! It touches me on several levels, and would not be topped as far as Disney moments ago until “Inside Out” came along. But again that’s another story.
You’re Welcome “Moana”
Sometimes you hear a song and you just love it immediately. Moana is good film, never seen all of it, and it’s clear “How Far I’ll Go” was meant to be the big song from the film. It did get the nomination for the Academy Award and deservedly so. But man did I love this one, I just I fell in love with this tune the first time I heard it. I think it’s because it sounds like Dwayne Johnson is just having the time of his life singing it. With so many somber tunes, a happy upbeat one is a nice change of pace.
I always ask if there are any I missed, but I know there are especially since I haven’t seen a lot of recent Disney films. I know for sure there’s one from Hunchback of Notre Dame people will be shocked isn’t here So let me know which songs you think belong on here.
Oh, I love "I just can't wait to be king! It is the only song in the movie, that is catchy and just fun to listen to. Sure, many people think that Simba is an annoying brat while singing this song. And I remember that my mother even wondered if he wanted his father to die, so he could be king instead! But the point is that Simba is just a kid at this point, who had not matured enough yet to realize the faults in his thinking. And in the end, he managed to take responsibility as an adult, while his uncle Scar, who was older and should be wiser than him, only used his position as king to boss others around and imprison Zazu. Even if that meant that the whole pride were near starvation, he didn't budge.
ReplyDeleteWhy do people forget that, he was a kid!!
DeleteSome people just can't stand bratty kids, at all. And those will never like Simba as a child. But for me, I like how we can see that he grew up and matured and Scar didn't.
