Course it’s hard to separate DS9 from Voyager or the movies, which is a shame it’s the one series that didn’t have it’s own special look. And for simplicity sake, just Starfleet uniforms and I’m keeping it standard dress and no casual attire or else this list will go on all day (so no comments on the silly stuff Seven of Nine, T’Pol and Troi wore).
#10.Star Trek TMP
Anyone surprised? Pretty much everything about that first movie was wrong right down to the awful uniforms. It’s not just the bland as hell colors, they look like pajamas! I mean Kirk’s kind of looks neat with the white vest thing he has one, the rest are just ridiculous!
#9.TNG (Season 1-2)
There is simply no excuse for this one. Ok, some may be wondering what I am talking about. Wasn’t the TNG uniforms the same all seven seasons? Well it’s true the color scheme was the same and the basic design was the same, but if you look closely you’ll see that season 1 and 2 the crew were wearinf these spandex things that fit a little to tight. Thank goodness they improved them when the cast complained, but more on that in a bit.
#8.Abrams Movies
I had no idea where to put this one. I give them credit for making those classic uniforms a little cooler but they still look..silly. They just dont have the class the original uniforms had. They’re the same as the new Enterprise, yeah it’s cool but it doesn’t really do anything else for me.
#7.Captain’s Variants
ok, I needed one more and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the tunic outfit Kirk wore for several episodes. I think a lot of people think he wore this all the time when it was really only in a handful of episodes during season 2. But it’s so well known that Captan Archer appeared in one (well, his mirror counterpart anyway). By the way the mirror version of Kirk’s tunic is muccchh cooler! Oh and I actually forgot, there was a version of this Kirk wore in the early episodes also which was even worst to look at. You can see it in “Enemy Within”, "Court Martial" and “Charlie X”. As for Picard he also had a variant which was a red jacket that resembled the standard uniform which he wore over a gray shirt. I never really liked it to be honest. Especially when he lost the jacket the shirt was just bland.
#6.The Classic Series
Ignoring the awful outfits worn in the pilot, you gotta love the simple but effective uniforms the crew work in the classic series. The outfits weren’t anything special, just shirts with a black color, but they still looked damn cool. Of course all women wore mini skirts for…reasons I guess. By the TNG tried the mini skirt thing when it began. But it didn’t last very long at all! Simple yet iconic, very well done.
#5.Enterprise
I actually liked these uniforms. They feel more like the spiritual predecessor to the movies more so than the TV series. But they’re still pretty cool. They’re jump suits but it’s nice to see a different color and style. Why do I have it over the classic series? Because they look more like uniforms and while I love the original series they were just shirts with a funny collar when you get right down to it.
#4.TNG (Season 3-7)
I know it sounds crazy since it wasn’t that huge a change, but man what a difference when they upgraded the uniforms! The collar was more formal, and it was more of a loose fitting shirt and pants outfit rather than the spandex crap before. It just looked better, and gave way to the infamous “Picard Maneuver”. Amusingly in season 3 the background extras still wore the original uniforms, making it very easy to tell the difference if you look close enough. When Generations came around the creators thought these uniforms would look “silly” on the big screen. So switching them with DS9 uniforms made much more sense.
#3.TNG Movies/Late DS9
This is a tough one. While I get that people liked these uniforms I sort of preferred the Voyager version. But they basically inverted the colors so the turtleneck had the department color scheme and the uniform itself was a standard gray. It was classy and nice, but I miss the more colorful uniforms. These were introduced in First Contact and lasted through the Next Gen movies, quickly becoming the standard uniform on DS9 (and Voyager whenever saw what was happening back on Earth). I have wondered what the in-universe explanation was for this change, but have yet to find one.
#2.Early DS9/Voyager
I never understood why, but DS9 gave us a different style of the TNG uniforms. It was a single piece open necked jumpsuit which looked pretty cool. They weren’t that different from TNG they just flipped it so it was a black uniform with a color collar, but they were unique enough to make DS9 stand out as its own thing. Until DS9 later adopted the movie uniforms. When DS9 switched it allowed Voyager to have its own look since they started with the DS9 style and kept it right through the series run. A lot of people wondered why they never changed, but I’m glad they didn’t it helps the show stand out.
#1.Star Trek II-VI
I loved these uniforms, they were so cool! They looked like actual uniforms for one thing rather than glorified pajamas. Also they had nice colors unlike gray which Starfleet seems obsessed with. It was a burgundy single breasted jacket with a stripe which grew larger depending on rank. The jacket could be discarded for a more casual attire but it was still cool. Of course Scotty sort of had his own outfit in these days which was so cool he wore it in the TNG episode he was in also. I always loved it when these old uniforms would pop up on TNG (usually without the white collar for some odd reason). Even Picard wore one one and it was awesome! Though you almost had to wonder how did Starfleet go from these very military style uniforms to the spandex pajamas they wore in early TNG? One complaint I have is Kirk would leave he jacket flap open and somehow that hurt the look in my opinion.
So, which one would I wear if I had to choose one? Oh c’mon, classic Kirk gold shirt…of course!
