Season 9, Episode 9
A Date for Peter
Plot Summary-Debra tries to arrange a date for Peter, but Ray is enraged when Peggy is included
Nitpick of the episode-Anyone remember “Sleepover at Peggy’s”? Don’t feel bad if you don’t clearly Ray forgot it. More on this below. It’s amazing how they made Peter go from someone we hated to someone we fully sympathize with here.
Best Line-“what if they start dating? We already have enough horrible people in this family”…Ray
Episode Fun Fact –Obvious this episode is one last chance to see some recurring characters. We get Peggy, Stefania, and Peter (who actually does have one more appearance)\
Deleted Scenes-Ray giving Peter advice
Syndication Edit-teaser, we find out who the women in the back who never speak are during the party
Best Character-Debra, for once I’m on her side
Worst Character-Ray, ughhhhhhhhhhhh
Final Thoughts-This was the final episode on my “Top 5 Worst Everybody Loves Raymond Episodes” list, and it still sucks. I’ve talked a lot about the creators tended to add conflict when they didn’t need to. Is that why Ray is a jackass here? His reasoning is just lame, he accuses Debra of trying to set up Peter and Peggy so that Debra will have another solider in her war with his mother. Um, how? Even if they did marry, which neither are thinking of by the way, that’s Robert’s family and has nothing to do with Marie. And of course he has to bring up the cookie incident, and even Peggy can’t believe he hasn’t let that go yet! I admit I have no idea what the episode could have been filled with without this, but Ray is just plain ridiculous here. At least he apologizes in the end. Roberts panicking when Stefania appears is lame too but this obviously just one chance to see her again. By the way when Marie and frank storm over the creators didn’t even try to give a good reason, guess there isn’t any point by now.
Grade-C-,still annoying after all these years
Season 9, Episode 10
Favors
Plot Summary-When Marie takes the blame for Debra’s mistake, she expects Debra to return the favor
Nitpick of the episode-Marie getting rid of all Frank’s clothes was deplorable. Because she can’t stand his clothes, well that’s her problem! It’s like she has to control everything, no wonder he fights against her nonsense as hard as he can! I love when Ray gets the letter and puts it down, the audience groans because they already knows where this is going!
Best Line-“Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go strangle a woman with her own bathrobe”..Frank
Episode Fun Fact -final appearance of Gianni and Andy
Deleted Scenes-none
Syndication Edit-the tag, frank is enjoying the pink bath robe a little to much
Best Character-Robert, the letter that starts this whole mess is a fan letter to Ray from Muhammad Ali that Robert made possible. And it was a pretty nice thing for him to do.
Worst Character-Debra, once again she can’t own up to her own mistakes. I like she realizes he is completely in the wrong, because she is. Who just tosses stuff out like that without checking it first? She pisses me off right from that opening scene when Ray is looking for a magazine and Debra admits since it wasn’t “put away” she probably tossed it. She has no right to do that! Ray is 100% right when he tells her to simply not touch his stuff. The worst part is that Ray does put the letter away, as Debra asked before, and it still wasn’t safe from her!!!!!!! Then to make matters worst she goes to Marie. Why?
Final Thoughts-This episode starts with a pretty relatable premise, I’m sure everyone has at one time or another thrown something out without realizing it was important to someone else, but then it gets kind if stupid. It turns into a whole thing about favors and how awesome Marie is at coming through when someone needs help. I like how Ray forgetting Debra’s birthday is a side note here, rather than being the whole episode. I like Frank in the scene where he is pissed about his clothes but he loses points for me when he rips apart Marie’s rose garden. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Bet you can’t guess how the episode ends? The family in the kitchen of course. The episode takes so long getting to the point that it never really develops it like other shows did.
Grade-B-
Season 9, Episode 11
The Faux Pas
Plot Summary-The family is outraged at Ray when he reveals a slip of the tongue he’s made a new friend of the boys.
Nitpick of the episode-So at a basketball game Ray comments to the boys friend that he doesn’t have to worry about picking up the peanut shells because that’s the janitor’s job. Not knowing the father was in fact a janitor. My question is, was that really such a horrible thing to say? At least not as bad as the family acts about it.
Best Line-“This is why sometimes when you talk my heart goes into my throat”…Marie
Episode Fun Fact –
Deleted Scenes-Ray relates Debra’s faux pas (which is a shame it was deleted)
Syndication Edit-sorry bad dvd again, no wonder streaming is so popular!
Best Character-Amy, she gets the last and best laugh of the episode when she says a nasty comment about Marie not realize Marie was standing right behind her!
Worst Character-Ray, not for his initial comment but for keeping the whole thing going. Ray, learn when to shut up!
Final Thoughts-This episode has shades of previous episodes when the family would debate an issue for the run of the episode. The only difference here is that there is a stranger to bounce the stuff of of, and the actor does a nice job subtly reacting to things. It’s another episode that is dialogue heavy making it hard to describe. The family basically digs up every politically incorrect statement they can and it’s actually pretty funny. And my dvd failed so I’ll have to leave it at that.
Grade-B-
Season 9, episode 12
Tasteless Frank
Plot Summary-Frank discovers he has the lost the ability to taste
Nitpick of the episode-If the pills were enhancing Frank manhood didn’t Marie notice?
Best Line-“Happy? How can I be happy? I am Rembrandt, and he’s BLIND!”…Marie
Episode Fun Fact –
Deleted Scenes-
Syndication Edit-
Best Character-Robert, that scene where he eats the hot food and races into the kitchen for water is great
Worst Character-Marie, of course Marie takes it personally when Frank can’t taste her food. It never even crosses her mind it could be something wrong with him. Even when she finds out the truth, she is just angry that now he can’t appreciate her cooking (guess that means no validation which she can’t handle).
Final Thoughts-It bothers that they had to make Frank’s problem one a medicinal one rather than a natural one. Maybe they were afraid to admit things happen to old people? Anyway that’s about all thus episode is, low brow humor. I guess we needed a Frank episode but did it have to be about that? Just didn’t work for me. And once again the girls butt in and force the guys to confront Frank and tell Marie. Not saying it was wrong it’s just they tend to be stick their noses in where it shouldn’t be. I also loved when Ray calls out Debra when she comes up with another brilliant diagnoses which is of course wrong.
Grade-C-
One more to go my friends. Will the series go out with a bang, or a wimper? Come back to find out!
