So
I was thinking about guilty pleasures. These are the things that are
silly or stupid, but we love them anyway. I have plenty from movies
(Independence Day, Star Trek Generations) and TV shows (Small Wonder,
The superhero shows on CW). And I started to wonder, can there be comic
book guilty pleasures?
And the answer is, sure there can be! Heck AT4W covers a lot of them from Game Boy Comics to Mr.T comics, to Brute Force and US 1. Linkara freely admit that the comic is stupid, but is o stupid that they’re fun! So I thought about it and came up with five comics which are either so silly they’re fun or were failures but I can’t help up but love them anyway.
Of course, only DC here :
CAMELOT 3000
I don’t think this one has ever been panned per se, though I don’t think that it was at Watchmen levels of popularity either. This is a guilty pleasure because it’s two things I normally hate. It’s not a story about superheroes (which I hate) and instead involves the legend of King Arthur (which I also hate) fighting an alien invasion in the year 3000. Yeah it sounds crazy but, it really works! Mike W. Barr is one of my favorite writers for a reason, and I enjoyed this and read it more than once. Though it’s been awhile since I picked up I do remember enjoying it.
Superfriends Comics
Yes they were silly and goofy, but they had to match the tone of the cartoon show. I loved these as a kid. And while I admit they don’t old quite the same appeal as an adult there is a part of me that still adores these JLA light stories. Especially in this day and age when so many comics have to be dark and gritty. This is light superhero action that is just a joy to read.
ARMAGEDDON 2001 Annuals
Yeah I’ve talked about this one before. Why did DC have to drop the ball with this one? It’s a long story but this big event’s surprise ending was spoiled which made DC scramble so their surprise would still be a surprise. Even if it made NO SENSE AT ALL. However, while the even was basically a failure some of the annuals were really good and I really enjoy reading them. I especially love that Superman cover above. If only that had really happened…..
MILLENNIUM
This one pains me because it seems like it has been totally forgotten. It was forgotten in-universe pretty fast. And every time I see a list of DC event comics, this one is rarely on there. Even though this was the major event in 1987. Is it perfect? Nah, not perfect. But it features the characters I loved at a time when comics were huge for me. I also loved how the tie-in’s worked. You didn’t have to read the tie-in’s but they were mostly all required reading to get the full story. I get that can be a turn off. The story about the Manhunters infiltrating the heroes personal lives was great, to bad the nonsense with the chosen (later known as The New Guardians) makes no sense.
DC CHALLENGE
Back in 1985 a bunch of writers for DC got together and decided to run an experiment. What if they did a challenge involving a bunch of writers and artists. The idea is simple, one creative team will begin the story and hand it off to the next. That team will do the second issue which will end on a cliffhanger…for the third team to resolve and continue the story. And so on and so on, then everyone would get together for the final issue. This is such a fun read as long as you turn your mind off. There are no ties to continuity to any character is pretty much be used, whether it makes sense or not. And as you can imagine a lot of things don’t add up, one team of writers will create a concept only for the next team to abandon it or take it a totally different way. But that’s what makes it fun. I love reading this and the story does make sense in the end…for the most part.
I’m sure there are more, but that was all I could think of. Do you guys have one? Comment and let me know.
