I’m really quite shocked I never covered this one. I guess it feels like I did because I’ve commented on great blogs done by others.
Thirty-five years ago Mickey’s Christmas Carol premiered in theaters. But since I’ve talked about that many times before, I decided to do something different. Disney has been doing Christmas shorts for ages. Even more if you include Silly Symphonies. But which one’s are my favorite that I still watch every year, despite my advanced age?
Here are my five favorite Disney Christmas cartoons. And to be clear, I mean shorts featuring Mickey and the gang not full length episodes and/or movies. Oh, and you may know my gripe about how Disney somehow seems to think snow and ice automatically equal Christmas. No, these have to be CHRISTMAS cartoons. And no Christmas Carol does count it’s a short not a movie. When it premiered in theaters it was accompanied by other Disney cartoons to make it long enough for a theatrical release.
Santa’s Workship
While I have issues with the follow up to this, ‘The Night Before Christmas”, this one is more tolerable. Yeah the Santa is still kinda xcreepy but at least teh scenario makes more sense. It’s Santa getting ready for the big sleigh ride. The animation and music are really nice.
Pluto’s Christmas Tree
I LOVE this one. I’ve seen about a thousand tomes for as long as I can remember. It’s a simple premise, Mickey cuts his tree down which happens to have Chip & Dale inside. While Mickey is busy decorating, Pluto see the two…and hijinks ensue. The best part is the end when Donald, Minnie and Goofy cameo as carolers.
Toy Tinkers
Pluto’s Christmas Tree is a classic. Why is this one always forgotten? One reason could is that it has similarities to the other. Including Chip & Dale, again. Another could be the ending which is kind of, well, stupid. Instead trashing a Christmas tree it’s various gifts the three have fun destroying.
Stuck on Christmas
While I have learned to appreciate the CGI adventure in “Twice Upon a Christmas” I still prefer this one. A play on that classic “Christmas Every Day” idea shows Huey, Dewey and Louie dreaming that it could be Christmas, well, every day. When it happens they learn to regret it. The best scene may be when the boys antics bring the tree down, literally, and rather than get enraged Donald just sits, sad, while Daisy gives him a reassuring hug. It’s a beautifully done scene, maybe one of Disney’s best quiet moments.
The Nutcracker
I know my friend on here frowned on this one, but it’s ok I hated Mickey’s Gift of the Magi. As for this, I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. Why? I guess a couple reasons. The story stays faithful to the ballet (more than other versions anyway). I LOVE the remix of the music used, the same melodies but jazzed up a bit. And it isn’t very long. Is it perfect? Oh heck no. That nonsense with the narrator and Ludwig does get old and there’s a little to much 4th wall breaking. This was originally a House of Mouse episode before being released in the “Snowed in at the House of Mouse” DVD.
Of course my favorite will always be Mickey’s Christmas Carol. It’s just one of the best cartoons I ever saw. Can’t believe it’s really that old! Did I miss your favorite? Comment and let me know.
