So
after discussing villain defeat’s that were less than satisfying, it’s
only fair to discuss the one’s that are. Those defeats that make us
shout “hell yeah!”. In order to have this happen you need two elements.
You need a villain so memorable that you’re happy to see him get his (or
hers) in the end. And of course the ending has to something that makes
you cheer (unlike my five choices last time).
For example, in the movie Pretty Woman I hated Jason Alexander’s greedy, lecherous character so much I was thrilled when this happened:
Of course this was a silly rom com, when it really works is when we have a true bastard villain who has hurt people and not shown an ounce of remorse. I already did Disney but memorable defeats aren’t limited to them. Here are five of my favorites, any genre but since I don’t see movie to much anymore you’ll forgive me if the list is a tad dated.
Lethal Weapon II
I always loved this one. The whole movie the villain is waving a little card and saying “diplomatic immunity!” because he is a visiting diplomat. I don’t recall why nor do I care to look it up. So when he is shot by Murtaugh anyway, with a corny line, we have grown to hate this guy so much we love it! I always remembered it. This was #2 on a watchmojo list similar to this, so good to know I’m not the only one who loved this.
Die Hard
Yeah somethings are so awesome that it’s impossible not to love them. This is the case of Alan Rickman’s baddie being killed off by McClean in the original Die Hard movie. It’s not a huge villain death, but it is a satisfying one.
Superman II
I mentioned this one in my previous article, but it’s just to cool to leave it off this list. Superman II is not perfect, in my opinion, but the way that Superman out thinks and defeats Zod has been and always will be the best villain comeuppance’s ever!
Jurassic Park
Does this count? I mean the Raptor’s threatening our heroes are hardly “the villain” of the movie. But damn if this isn’t satisfying when the T Rex comes in at the last second and saves the day. This may be cheat but the smile I have watching the clip makes me decide it’s OK.
Back to the Future
Yeah this was obvious. I dare you to remember a punch that was ever more satisfying. The scene works on several levels. First of all, we hate Biff. Second, they did a great job showing what a massive wimp George is so this character moment is just fantastic. And third, it isn’t to big. George punches Biff, and gets the girl. That’s it, but the staging and acting and of course the music make it one of THE best villain comeuppance’s.
Well as you can imagine there are loads and loads more, I didn’t even mention Star Wars! Comment and let me know your favorites. And more than likely I’ll be back with five more choices before to long. By the way this works for TV shows too, but that’s another subject for another time.
