I
talked about villain defeat’s that don’t work out well before. So it’s
only fair to discuss the other side of that coin, villain defeat’s which
are awesome. And no one knows how to memorably kill off their villain’s
like Disney. Even when it’s not done big, it’s always memorable. I’m
surprised I haven’t done this one yet, though I did discuss Disney death
fake out’s which Disney does also sadly love to do. Too much!
Now obviously I am limiting this to five so a TON will be left off. These are just my favorites from the Disney movies I have seen over the years
Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)
Needed one older movie, and it was harder than you would think to come up with one. Who was the villain in Pinocchio, the whale? Dumbo gets a little revenge at the end but nothing satisfying,. We don’t care about the deer in Bambi to care when Bambi wins. And while I LOVE how Cinderella wins the day at the end of that movie, it’s doesn’t count here. So I was left with this one. I remember catching this movie years ago, and I don’t know if I had forgotten the end or what but damn that climax is amazing! The only other ending that comes close is maybe Jafae, and of course in Little Mermaid Ursula goes out in a very similar way but Maleficent is the one I remember.
Sykes (Oliver & Company)
There are a lot of movies I never saw or hardly remember. This movie is not very memorable. I bet a majority of people out there wont even remember the villains name from this movie. And aside from “Why Should I Worry”, the movie doesn’t have to many really memorable scenes. One exception is the way the villain, named Sykes, is killed off. It’s pretty intense, beautifully animated, and unforgettable. It’s a lot like Cruella De Vil’s demise in 101 Dalmations, but that one is more played for laughs.
Scar (The Lion King)
You always gotta love poetic justice. Like Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Or that crazy ending in Emperor’s New Groove. But those were played for laughs, this one not so much. This one is so satisfying on so many levels. I think we all want to see Scar meet his end by the end of the movie. And it would easy to be disappointed since Simba doesn’t do it. But having the Hyena’s turn on Scar, who has finally had all his lies crumbles underneath him, is just so satisfying we can ignore that our main heroes have nothing to do with it. Give Disney credit for making the Hyena’s memorable enough so that we love seeing them get their revenge after Scar throws them under the bus.
Clayton (Tarzan)
I am not a big fan of what I call “the accidental defeat”. Like how Gaston is basically defeated by being clumsy, more focused on stabbing the Beast than making sure he had a grip on something. The same with Frollo in Hunchback who just stood on the wrong place, Quasimodo did nothing to really defeat him. Heck even the Queen in Snow White is like that, pretty much doing herself in. Actually just falling seems to be a popular way for Disney’s villains to be killed off. And while Clayton’s demise certainly falls into that category too, I always kind of like how it was portrayed. I realize this one may not make a lot of people’s lists but it’s on mine.
Hopper (A Bugs Life)
I always loved how Hopper finally meets his demise. It’s just so fulfilling seem him be the victim of his own arrogance. The best part isn’t that he is stupid enough not to realize that the bird is real this time, but when we see that the eggs have hatched and three very hungry chicks are waiting for him. It’s a nasty death, but I always loved. Pixar villain defeats were usually good and satisfying, but not great. For me his was a big exception.
So I wanted to leave with one more big one, and while I bad mouthed it above I decided to leave this clip of Ursula’s defeat from Little Mermaid. Ursula was quite honestly one of the best Disney villain’s ever and her defeat is as big and epic as it should have been.
Just for the record, I was being nitpicky about the choices I did not list but that was just that, nitpicking. Disney always knows how to send off their memorable villains in fantastic ways so that everyone remembers them. Comment and below and tell me your favorites.
