When this was first announced, I was intrigued. I didn’t care for Man of Steel or the Snyderverse in general. Then I heard the casting announcements. Guy Gardner? Mr Terrific?? Metamorpho????! I dreaded the movie, not because I couldn’t let go of Henry Cavill no longer being in the role (seriously guys move on already) but figuring it was going to be a clustered mess and more of a pre-Justice League movie and not a genuine Superman movie. This became worst when images and scenes appeared, and David Corenswet wasn’t wowing me as Superman. So at last the movie was released, and critics mostly liked it!
So the time has come to watch this and see if my fears were justified, or if I finally get a decent version of my favorite character since 1982! I should mention I know the story and the surprises going in, I don’t worry about “spoilers” and have heard plenty of reviews at this point.
And what did I think?
It was good. Really Really good!
Yeah I admit it, I enjoyed watching that movie and it left me happier than MOS. Corenswet won me over, he truly gets the character. Brosnahan was a fantastic Lois and the two are great together though yeah a few more scenes would have been nice. Actually all the casting was really good.
Any gripes? Sure. Could have done without the heavy rock music (though the Superman theme was nice). It was better than the Flash movie to be fair. I thought the public’s turning against Superman was a little fast. They just accept the news report just like that? And Ultraman being a clone could have waited until the next movie. It added very little. It would have been just as fine if he was just some stooge Lex was using.
And some things felt like repeat from other movies. People afraid of Superman because he’s an alien? Haven’t seen that. Lex breaking into the fortress of solitude? This is what the third time? Superman turning himself in? Wow how original even Lois & Clark did it!! Ms Tesmacher saving Superman? Yeah never seen that except the first movie. Metropolis under attack? Yawn. We got a clone from a strand of hair Lex acquired? Hmmm….. oh and yes, so glad lex is the villain again heaven forbid it not be him or zod 🙄
However that all being said, I really did have fun watching the movie. Fight scenes were fine as were the effects. Lots have griped about the pacing but it didn’t bother me too much. What about that “Justice Gang”? They were well cast though Hawkgirl was a waste. They did not take over the movie as I feared but you could argue you didn’t really need them either. Mister Terrific wasn’t as overused as I feared and was well performed. His big scene was fantastic I admit it. He didn’t need to be there but he was well done. I think the “twist” with Mrs tesmacher and the photos could have been developed better but it still worked.
As for Luthor he was really good, some complain he yells to much but it didn’t bother me. What about that other “twist” involving Superman’s birth parents? It’s an interesting way to go I just wish we had seen more of ma and pa Kent. This is a common criticism and a valid one. I would have liked his last speech to be longer too (and told to the public not just Luther). And seeing the public accept him again would have been nice. He’s Superman because he chooses to be, and in the end he is human first not Kryptonian. That last shot at the fortress didn’t have the weight it should have though it was good.
Bottom line I was invested in the story, engrossed in the action, and smiling at the end. Even Krypto who I wasn’t looking forward to won me over. I Didn’t get bored or looking for the fast forward button, and the fact it reminded me of comics I’ve read is definitely a plus. Can’t ask for more. It was a good movie and I’d be interested in seeing where these movies are going. Guys Superman isn’t Batman he’s supposed to be light and hopeful not dark and brooding like in Snyder movies.
