Hard to believe that in the old days Lois Lane was just a nuisance. She was either trying to prove Clark’s secret or sabotage is attempts with other women. And somehow she had her own solo series for 100 issues, figure that one out! It wasn’t until the early 90’s she finally learned the secret (and I never loved how it was done) but it took and Lois became such a better character for me once she knew. Not only did we lose the “Superman tricking her” stuff but she become a source for Clark to confide in and talk to. Nor to mention helping once in awhile! Until The New 52…but that’s getting off topic.
So since they did it in the comics most TV and movies Lois usually does find out the secret and the reactions tend to range from shock to outrage to just plain thrilled. Here are my five favorite “Superman tells Lois” scenes. I had wanted to do more than five but there aren’t as many out there as you’d think.
#5.Superman:Doomsday
So I rented this out of curiosity, and man did I hate it. This was clearly the Animated Series version of The Death and Return of Superman and the plot was lame. I also hated that here, Lois was in love with Superman first and had no idea he was Clark. Yeah, that’s not how it’s supposed to work he is supposed to earn her love as Clark first. Anyway, the one moment I liked was the end when Superman finally drops the act. Lois gets it, and runs into his arms. By the way Anne Heche as Lois? Just no.
#4.Lois & Clark (1)
We get two from Lois & Clark. One ends up being a fakeout, though it’s so cool. Tempest (one of the shows better villains played by Lane Davis) is a time traveller who decides to drop the bomb on her. It;’s a great scene and Teri Hatcher’s facial reactions are perfect. Tempest often spoke for the audience and the things he says to Lois here aren’t far off from what really though of her and her inability to see behind the glasses. I couldn’t find a clip where she slaps Clark after Tempest leaves, and by the way this is a great episode. But since its a fake out it stays a little high.
and this scene perfectly sums up the Clark vs Superman dynamic for me :
#3.Superman II
I like this because it took place before it would become commonplace. Lois learning Clark’s secret was unheard of then (probably why he memory kiss erases it later). And while I have bashed Margot Kidder’s Lois in the past you gotta admire how she deduced the truth and gets it out of Clark. She goes above and beyond! And it takes an accident to finally get Clark to drop the act. But the best thing about the scene is the way Christopher Reeve plays it. Dropping the whole act seems to really free Superman, he seems like a totally different person. By the way if you think the fireplace scene is silly you see see how Lois learned the truth in the Donner cut!!
What's that? Yes in fact there is another version from Superman II in the Donner cut! Yeah there sure is and here it is below. You'll find Lois even more clever and smart here. The sappy romance is dialed down and unlike the silly accident on the rug above she literally out thinks him and is pretty awesome doing it.
#2.Lois & Clark (2)
So how did the real reveal go? Much like with the Superman II version, Lois deduces it and then springs it on him. When he proposes! But it makes sense he wants her to say yes to Clark first. Unlike Superman II, she isn’t turned on she’s hurt and angry! And honestly that’s a bit more believable. But the chemistry between the two is top notch and I always like this scene. Yeah the show started to suck afterwards but that’s another story.
#1.Smallville
Oh Smallville why are you so hated? There are actually a lot of reveals but I didn’t want this to be a Smallville blog and I wanted to focus on Lois. So I am just discussing where Clark reveals the truth to Lois. Well, the one that took anyway there were a couple fakeout’s. And the scene is fantastic, leading to a great reaction. The thing here is that Lois had figured it out before this so Clark’s revealing it allows her to stop pretending she doesn’t. Which is clearly liberating. It’s a wonderful scene Clark’s dialogue is perfect and I adored Erica Durance’s Lois. Oh ok Clark saying he was “the blur” rather than “Superman” is a little lame but, the heart is there.
Honorable Mention :
Superman:Man of Steel
I decided that I wanted to do a mention of Amy Adams who did do a great Lois. But she one upped all these other’s because she was in on the secret almost from the start, because there was no secret in the start! Since he was never Clark he never had that desire to win her over as “himself” (yeah this Superman is clearly from the NEW 52 era) so no reason why she couldn’t be on board from the get go. I love when he finally does become Clark and the idea she helped him with that identity is a nice touch. Smallville kind of did that too when Lois helped Clark create the clumsy reporter image as a true secret identity. Anyway, Adams was great and here’s a scene of the two.

If I missed one you think should be on here comment and let me know. I
said I’d do villain reveals and still haven’t, so may have to work on
that for next time.
