A looong time ago I listed my five favorite sitcom mothers. But of course mother’s are not specific to sitcom. What about animated shows? So in honor of Mother’s Day, here are my top five animated mother’s. One rule, they have to be TV animated Mom’s.
#5.Jane Jetson
Jane is a perfect “Donna Reed” style mom and that’s why she is on the top of the list. There isn’t anything “realistic” about her. She basically keeps house and takes care of the house. That doesn’t mean she’s a bad mom, by no means, but she’s also a little to perfect. Except for her driving skills which in today’s world seems a tad sexist.
#4.Linda Belcher
Believe it or not, I have seen Bob’s Burger (parts of it at least) and I like how realistic Linda feels. She isn’t a perfect person but she tries hard. But she also does the one thing none of the other’s here does. She works for a living!! And no having a job in one episode only doesn’t count.
#3.Lois Griffen
This family needs someone to keep things grounded, especially with Pete as a husband, and that’s what Lois’s role seems to be. She is patient but has no trouble reeling her husband in when he is off an running. There’s not question she loves her family, but only has so much patience for them too.
#2.Wilma Flintstone
Who else? I mean, she set a standard that every cartoon mom has tried to live up to. Yeah she was a housewife but unlike Jane Jetson she clearly did it because she was loyal to Fred not because it was all she was capable of. She did more complaining that she wanted to get out of the cave once in awhile. She’s also the one mother on this list was clearly in charge. I suppose Betty Rubble deserved a mention but Betty was more the wide eye loyal housewife while Wilma was the down to Earth “aint gonna take any crap from anyone” housewife and mom. Though she clearly loves her husband. I’d ask how she puts up with Fred, but we have one more slot to fill…..
#1.Marge Simpson
When I talked about sitcom mom’s I put Jill Taylor at #1 because she was allowed to not be perfect with quirks and faults aplenty. And that’s the one thing love about Marge. Oh she’s a good mother, loyal housekeeper, and supporting wife but it’s the fact she isn’t perfect that make her #1 here. She is flawed, makes mistakes, and has even broken down once in awhile. I also like the way she handles her kids, always firm but understanding at the same time. She tries to be reasonable rather than just screaming at them. But the big question is, how does she put up with Homer?? She sees his real heart despite all the stupidity and love that side of him. Gotta respect that.
Did I miss your favorite? Comment and let me know. Happy Mother’s Day!
