With the Ducktales remake having come out (FYI it’s nothing offensive but not for me), I noticed people seem to like it. And after checking it out, I see why. It seems to upgrade stuff from the original series but keeps the heart and charm that made that series work. To bad some other reboots don’t get that. Sometimes people will reboot a cartoons series but will either focus on one area to much over another, or just miss the mark entirely on what made the cartoons so beloved.
Some get it, for instance the JLA cartoon was leaps and bounds better than the old Superfriends show. And the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show had its fans, in fact they did a special crossing over the old show with the new. But not all are so lucky. Here are five cartoon reboots that I wanted to like but I have to admit, they just didn’t get it right.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
In 2002 the 80's series got a reboot, and I watched the pilot episode. It did fix a lot of the problems with the classic show, most notably better animation leading to awesome action scenes. The characters and backstory were fleshed a lot better too. But the show missed one thing the new one had, heart. The characters in the old show were memorable and we liked them, and I didn’t get that with this one. For example The Sorceress went from being a kind mother figures to a dead pan Egyptian style princess with no personality at all. So I saw the pilot, and that was it for me.
Popples
Hey, remember a few weeks ago I mentioned the reboot of this show on Netflix? It’s really stupid. I mean I’m not going to pretend that the other show was intelligent and all, but this is really kids show crap. Add to the fact that the Popples aren’t cute here, what the hell are they supposed to be in this show? Even the toys are less creative, why bother?
The Garfield Show
Ok we all know that the live action movies were crap, but what about that OTHER cartoon show? You know, the one tried to do what Garfield and Friends did but failed painfully. Yeah I watched the Garfield Show and it was just, not that good. It totally lacked ant of the charm that the original show had. Is it the worst of these on this list? No probably not but it can’t beat Garfield and Friends in my book.
Teen Titans Go!
I actually saw some of this thanks to my nephew and good god is it stupid! Yeah I know “it’s for little kids”, but come on! I saw the old show, not much but enough, to get that it was decent enough. They at least respected the characters and and wrote some good stories. This? It’s sooooo stupid! I can’t even describe it, they basally turned the characters into jokes who acted like stupid children that were around my nephew’s age. 5!!! This was a horrible one because it didn’t come out years and years later, there were fans of the old cartoon who watched this and said WTF???
New Mickey Shorts
If these have an actual title sorry I’m not sure what it is. But good god on gravy do I hate these things! Ok to be fair, this is a cheat since it’s not a remake of any one particular thing. Except maybe those old shorts from the old days. But I had been loving what Disney was doing with Mickey for years. Mickey Mouseworks, House of Mouse, and even Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. These cartoons hurt me. They are so badly animated it hurts. The characters are so annoying that it hurts. The stories are so stupid that it hurts. And the fact they are making a ride on this stuff…scares me. I watched a Christmas episode about Donald having to go south or he’ll die, but he doesn’t want to fly south…and if I talk about that one anymore I will start yelling very loudly! I get there are fans of these and that’s great, but man do I hate them!!!!
Now of course if you like these shows, that’s cool. They are just not for me and I will enjoy my originals thank you. There are others, like the the new Scooby Doo shows which has painful animation but at least tries to maintain the spirit of the old shows from what I can see. If I missed any others you feel should be mentioned, comment and let me know.
So what about animated shows turned into live action movies? Yeah we’ll get into that one next time.
