My 15 Favorite Star Trek Action Scenes

We’ve talked a lot about Star Trek this year. We’ve discussed characters, stories, media, and other things related to this 50 year old franchise. But let’s be honest, the coolest thing about Star Trek are the awesome action scenes! Space battles, fist fights, and moments of suspense that leave you sitting on the edge of your seat again and again.

Here are my favorite action scenes from Star Trek, anything from space battles to actual fights between two characters. I did two per series, and we’ll get to the movies when we get to them.

TOS–

Amok Time

To be fair to the old series, we’re not going to find space battles that intense here. They tried but it was the 60’s and there was only so much they could do. And no, the remastered versions do not count in this case. So, we start with an old fashioned fist fight. It’s really kind of amazing, the best fight scene in the history of the original series is between Kirk and Spock! But they did a fantastic job with this scene, and it makes for a fantastic episode.

The Doomsday Machine

This episode has one of the most gut wrenching suspenseful moments of them all. And it isn’t really an action scene. Well, not in the conventional sense. Kirk is on the Constellation while he drive sit into the Doomsday Machine. He just needs to be beamed off before he’s killed. Great idea, if the transporter worked! A perfect blend of music and suspense that will have you at the edge pf your seat every time.

TNG–

Yesterday’s Enterprise

I’ve talked and talked about this one. The final battle in the episode is fantastic, and for one simple reason. Since it’s an alternate time line, the Klingons are able to pound and pound the Enterprise. It’s quite a dramatic battle, and the music is pitch perfect leading all the way up to that moment when the Enterprise-C finally enters the rift. The below clip is just the music (all I could find), and somehow losing the dialogue doesn’t hurt the scene at all.

All Good Things….

Of course TNG had some pretty awesome battle’s, I could do a whole list of them, but this is the one I loved. The Pasteur (long story) is being pounded, and just when all looks lost what should emerge but The Enterprise, packed with laser canons! This moment is pure awesomeness.

DS9-

Way of the Warrior

While I liked other action scenes in this series more, including the war arc of course, the one that I always loved was in “Way of the Warrior”. It was one of the best action scenes ever done in Trek, in my opinion, and set the standard that the late war episodes would have to meet.

The Changing Face of Evil

There were many epic battle scenes during the war episode, with shots of multiple ships attacking all at once. What a far cry from the original series, or even TNG. But this one is particularly memorable because The Defiant is actually destroyed. This was a big deal, you never saw the main vessel’s destroyed in an episode (not counting the movies of course). Unlike Yesterday’s Enterprise this was real…until they replaced the ship a couple episodes later.

Voyager-

Child’s Play

You could basically throw every fight with The Borg on here as far as Voyager goes, but this one was really cool. Not because it was big, but because it really felt like Voyager was in honest jeopardy with no way out. It’s a great and memorable action scene in an otherwise forgettable episode.

EndGame

It only figured that the final episode of Voyager would have a major action scene. They were fighting The Borg after all. The scene where we see the Borg sphere emerge in Federation space is epic, not only are not sure if Voyager will destroy the sphere we also aren’t sure if they actually made it back. All leading to the bittersweet moment where it turns out yes, they did. My favorite thing in this scene is how Starfleet is deploying two dozens starships at a moments notice to confront the sphere, a far cry from  the movies when The Enterprise was always “the only starship in range”.

Enterprise-

Twilight Teaser

There isn’t much to praise about Enterprise, I think I’ve made that point, but one of the best teaser’s every had to come from the episode “Twilight”. This was an alternate future story involving Archer with a memory impairment. The episode kicks off by showing the Xindi destroying Earth! Not since “Cause and Effect” has an opening teaser made people shout WTF???

Broken Bow

I can’t lie, this is from the pilot and I only used because it was one of the few clips I found online. And I wanted to be fair.

Now obviously the movies had to step things up a notch, and they usually did giving some great moments of action. Here are five that I really love….

The Reliant vs The Enterprise from Star Trek II

Yeah that scene where Kirk and the crew first encounter  the Reliant is pure gold. Everything works, from the music adding to the tension to the fantastic performance by Montalban. It’s classic for a reason

Kirk vs Kruge from Star Trek III

One thing the movies always seemed to miss was an old fashioned Kirk fight scene. Kirk was always fighting someone in the series, but for some reason he doesn’t seem to do it much in the movies. Which is why I love this fight between Kruge and Kirk as the planet falls apart around them.

Kirk defeats Chang from Star Trek VI

The Undiscovered Country may not be the most memorable of the movies, that final battle between the Enterprise and the Klingons is really good. Heck, Doug Walker used it in To Boldly Flee, and why not? It’s a great scene full action and suspense…and ending with the most epic hell yeah moment when the Enterprise and the Excelsior blow the Klingon ship to hell.

Picard defeats the Borg Queen from Star Trek First Contact

And from The Next Generation movies….there isn’t much. Most of thier action scenes chose style over substance. But one that I did like was the final battle with the Borg Queen. It isn’t very long, but it’s probably the coolest action scene in any four of those movies.

Opening to Star Trek (2009)

Ok, I’m a fair person. So I have to be honest, the opening scene of Star Trek was pretty damn epic. They really threw their hearts in that one, not only do we have massive space battle but we even get a heart warming moment as George Kirk talks to his wife as she gives birth, seconds before he saves hundreds of lives by sacrificing himself. It’s to bad the rest of the movie wasn’t this epic.
