Star Trek 60th….and we need to talk

Happy new year!

With many notable anniversaries this year, including the United States itself, the big one I’m most excited about is Star Trek! Yeah hard as it is to believe, this beloved franchise turns 60 this year. Ten years ago for the 50th I went nuts with articles about this franchise. So what do I plan for the 60th?

Well my output is nowhere near what it used to be but I did have an idea. Currently I’ve written 179 articles on Trek (not counting the TOS overview). There is nothing I have talked about more. It would cool if I could get to 200 before the official anniversary in September. So that’s what I’m going to try to do. I say “try” because I may forget or get distracted. But that is my “resolution”. So I’ll do a bunch of overrated articles and maybe fill in the gaps in other ways.

But….there’s one thing I need to talk about first. You see Trek had a renaissance after 2009 and produced a bunch of new tv and movies. I’m thrilled these programs have found an audience and keep this franchise alive. There’s just one thing. I hate them. Picard was decent (season 3 was anyway) but Discovery was awful. Strange New Worlds is ridiculous, and Starfleet Academy makes me nervous. I can’t get into the animated stuff and don’t get me started on the awful section 31 movie. If you love them then fantastic. But the disregard for continuity, the way they retcon whatever they want, and fact the tech is completely different is all just to distracting for me. I was excited for Star Trek Legacy but of course that will probably never happen.

Almost 30 years ago when Next Gen came out the young people like me were excited while older folks were appalled that a new show would dare come out. They wouldn’t even watch it! Now, I am one of those older people saying “yeah that’s not my Star Trek”.

My point is simply while I love Trek and want to celebrate it don’t expect too much love on the new stuff. Star Trek has endured for decades and will continue to for many more. Let’s celebrate that this year whether you’re a Captain Kirk fan or a Captain Michael fan (thats her name, right?). Live long and prosper.
