Five “Futuristic” Tech From TNG We Need Today

The other day I talked about tech on The Next Generation that has actually seen the light of day today. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things on the show which are still a little beyond our science. So here are five pieces of tech from TNG which I’d love to see in real life.

Phaser

There was just something about the phasers on TNG that made them so much cooler tahn their classc TOS versions. I guess it was all the uses it had. Oh sure it could still stun and kill but the settings were varied and you could do with a hand phaser what you needed a full phaser rifle to do in the old days.

Replicators

Yeah these are real cool. Maybe a little too cool, why is there any mind of manufacturing in the future if everything can be made out of thin air? And how exactly does replicated food work anyway? I mean Synethol makes sense, it tastes like alcohol but isn’t. So, what is replicated food exactly? Still It would be cool to have these.

Dermal Regenerators

Oh I love these! How perfect would it be if you could just wave a wand around a cut or other injury and..voila! Instantly cured! Actually classic Trek had versions of these but TNG made them so cool. And Voyager would confirm that it still does require a certain skill to use them correctly.

Tricorders/Medical Scanners

Oh yeah this would be sweet. Of course tricorders are used on the show for all sorts of functions, scanning for life forms, etc. But the one I like the most is the medical tricorders. Just scan a thingamabob in front of someone and the tricorder can tell you exactly how they are. There have been attempts to get a working device like a tricorder into real life so maybe someday.

Transporters

If there were any Trek invention I could have right now, this would be it. Can you imagine? Just jump into a chamber, and whisk away to wherever you need to be in seconds. No waiting in traffic. No rushing because you’re late. Just poof, and you’re there! This has always been my favorite Trek invention. It’s gotten a bad rap these last few years from people who like to overthink the device. They say “it’s not transporting it’s destroying a person and reassembling them as a completely new person”. Yeah…no. Sorry but TNG went out of its way to show that is not the case. A person is broken down into energy and reassembled, just like that. For some reason people today just like to overthink things.
