So let’s ring in the new year and start to celebrate this milestone today, with this little follow up:
I talked a long while back about how when I certain movies the first
time I didn’t realize how bad they were. Like when I saw “The Phantom
Menace” I was so excited to see a Star Wars movie I totally overlooked
how bad that movie is. I later figured it out when I couldn’t sit
through the DVD.
That happens sometimes, we get so hyped about a movie we don’t
realize at first just how lame it is. Then we re-watch it and…yeah.
Pretty bad. I did five of these but over the last eight years or so I
have discovered five more examples for what I mean. These aren’t guilty
pleasures, movies I knew were lame and still love them, these are movies
I am embarrassed to say I loved at one time. And yes “Hate” is a little
harsh let’s say I understand they aren’t very good.
Green Lantern
Yeah this is a huge one for me. I had waited years to see this. My
favorite super-hero growing up, who I even wanted to dress up as for
Halloween, finally on the big screen! So I watched it and loved it.
Looking back though, it’s not a perfect movie. It’s not god awful, but
there are problems with it. My favorite is the scene where Hal first
becomes Green Lantern only to..go to a bar with his girlfriend. The
pacing was all over the place with this one. Nostalgia Critic summed it
up when he said it looks like Green Lantern, but it doesn’t
feel like Green Lantern.
Mama Mia
In a different article I called this movie one of my favorite musical
movies. Course the big thing there is that i don’t see many musical
movies. I saw the musical in New York and it was a lot of fun. So much
so that I transferred that fun to this movie, which was just badly cast.
I mean who the heck casted this movie and what were they high on? But
more than that, the movie just doesn’t translate as well to film. It’s
as if they literally copied the stage play, and you can’t do that. There
are things in a play you just can’t do in a movie. You need more of a
structure and flow. Which this film doesn’t.
Twister
Ah, here’s one I never discussed before. Gee you’d almost think I’d
nearly done 1000 articles or something. This is the 90’s Helen Hunt/Bill
Paxton film about tornado hunters who, well, hunt tornadoes. Yeah
that’s really about it this movie is about as empty of characters as you
can get. But I admit I saw it in theaters and got hooked by the
effects. I’m glad these kind of movies didn’t last forever. The poster
compares it to Speed but that movie had a need premise, the premise of
this movie is simple:Tornadoes!!!
While You Were Sleeping
I mentioned this in a Christmas article a few weeks ago, and I admit
when I saw it I liked it. Looking back, man is the story cliche and
predictable. I guess the charm of Sandra Bullock one me over or
something. This is the one where Sandra Bullock is in love with a man
who is in a coma, but ends up falling for his brother while his family
thinks she is already with the guy in the coma (even though they never
met). Man, sounds kinda like a sitcom episode more than a movie.
Fever Pitch
I am a Boston Red Sox fan. Hell yes I was thrilled they won again
this last year. And hell yes I loved this movie based around the 2004
World Series win. But let’s be fair, this Jimmy Fallon movie is not that
great. The plot is flimsy and the characters not well done. Barrymore
is trying but Fallon obviously can’t pull the romantic stuff off. There
is a reason his movie career went nowhere. Is this movie god awful? No,
but would I like it if I were not a Red Sox fan? Probably not.
Any movies you guys liked at first but not anymore? Comment and let me know.
