So about six months ago I did a top 10 list about my favorite space vessel’s in TV and movies. The Enterprise got #1, but I lumped all the versions into one catgeory and shunted other Star Trek ships into the “honorable mention” category. So I decided it was only fair to do a similar list on just Star Trek that I can give them all a little love. And that is what we gave today.
#10.Rio Grande
I needed something to round out the list. What about the Abrams version of the Enterprise? Yeah…no. Before The Defiant these ships were used all the time on DS9. One was the Rio Grande. And these ships were awesome, also being used on TNG. They were just big enough so they weren’t shuttle craft, you could comfortably live on it but at the same time they packed a lot of firepower.
#9.Shuttle Galileo
I always loved the shuttlecraft on the original show. I’m not sure why, it just has its own character. It was sleek and even rugged (check out Galileo 7 if you don’t believe me). So it seemed only fair to mention it here.
#8.Enterprise E
This ship is pretty damn cool looking. But this vessel epitomizes one of the problems I have with the movies. Since it isn’t the TV show we don’t get to know these vessels very well. And I never felt anything for this ship, including for the design.
#7.Deep Space Nine/The Defiant
I decided it was only fair to put DS9 into the same category. DS9 was
a space station but man was it a cool one. It was sort of a shopping
mall in space and was great at kicking ass even if it didn’t move. As
for The Defiant, man was a that tough little ship! Designed to battle
the Borg and what it lacked in size it made up for in firepower.
#6.Excelsior/Enterprise B
Yeah the Enterprise B was also one of these, but it was the original that made the Excelsior class famous. It was sleek and impressive. It didn’t really do anything cool until Star Trek VI, but that scene in that movie where the Excelsior and Enterprise gang up on the Klingon’s is epic.
#5.NX Enteprise
One of the few praises I give Enterprise is that the ship by the same name is pretty cool. It’s a nice design which is simple and yet effective. You can kind of see the future vessels in the design but it stands tall very much on its own.
#4.Voyager
This may be the one controversial choice but for me, I think this ship is pretty cool. I love how the warp nacelles rise when it goes into warp, and I like that the ship can actually land! It also has bio neural circuitry making this ship pretty damn bad ass.
#3.Enterprise
Ok in order to avoid confusion for the sake of this list all the movie versions is the Enterprise A ad the TV version is the original TV version. Even though technically that isn’t how it’s supposed to be (refit my eye). And what else can I say about this ship that I haven’t? It was one of the best designs ever and I have been in love with this ship for as long as I an remember. This is the only ship I truly enjoy looking at every time we get a shot of it. Why only #3? See below.
#2.Enterprise A
Let’s be fair, the movie version is an improvement over the TV version and I’d be lying if I pretended that wasn’t true. That scene in Star Trek IV when we see the new Enterprise A is still one of the coolest moments EVER. So what about the Enterprise C? That was only in one episode and we didn’t learn much about it really aside from the fact it culd take punishment. It was a decent design, like the classic version but much sleeker.
#1.Enterprise D
This ship was was just amazing. It was so large and immense that you had to be impressed with it. It was so big in fact you could have families aboard. This is the only ship where people truly lived on. And the ship was awesome in battle. The coolest feature that was never used was the saucer separation feature. This ship earned respect from everyone who saw it. It was the flagship for a reason!
Oh ok here is the Abrams movie version. Which seemed to go out its way to remove any and all charm from the ship!
