Season 7, Episode 6
Robert Needs Money
Plot Summary-When Ray and Debra give Robert a check to help with expenses, they are appalled to find out his he is using it for a trip to Las Vegas
Nitpick of the episode-If you thought I was to critical back in “Cruising with Marie” by insisting Debra wouldn’t have allowed Ray go off with his mother like that, check out the tag of this episode where Ray tries to talk Debra into letting him got to Vegas with Robert. She practically threatens to leave him!
Best Line-“No! No way! Lending money to Robert is the stupidest thing I ever heard.”..Frank
Episode Fun Fact –
Deleted Scenes-top of the teaser, Ray comes home with cookies; Ray trying to talk to Robert
Syndication Edit-Frank and his rules about lending money to people
Best Character-Ray, this is one time when Ray doesn’t under react . He’s gets mad at Robert pretty quick.
Worst Character-Robert, What the hell did he think Ray and Debra gave him that money for??? And he is way out of line when he says that Ray is only successful because of luck, thankfully he apologizes.
Final Thoughts-I really don’t know about this episode. It feels like rehash, we’ve seen this Ray/Robert stuff before. We bet more Robert whining about how lucky Ray is and how Ray supposedly doesn’t want to see Robert happy. It also feels a lot like that episode about Ray having control of the checkbook. I guess the idea was to comment on how lending money to family can sometimes backfire. Which it can. But it just goes back and forth about whether Robert is going to actually take that money. Not good when an episode reminds me of three others.
Grade-B-
Season 7, Episode 7
The Sigh
Plot Summary-Debra sighs which makes Ray volunteer to give the bathroom up to her.
Nitpick of the episode-We finally see the kid’s bathroom and it’s a total mess. Maybe Marie is right about Debra’s housekeeping after all? By the way doesn’t Ray get up before the kids?
Best Line-“Do I disgust you?”…Ray
Episode Fun Fact
Deleted Scenes-none
Syndication Edit-longer opening
Best Character-Ray, who can blame him if for finally snapping at Debra here
Worst Character-Debra, that scene where she barges into Ray’s office is pretty awful. She really can’t figure out maybe he needs some alone time? Of course when he finally speaks up she gets mad. She says it’s because rather than ask nicely he had to give “a big speech about how he has nothing”. Yeah not buying it. She just wants to be a baby. I always love how women want men to express their feelings as long as it isn’t about them.
Final Thoughts-Would you believe this whole episode is leading up that last scene where Ray and Debra rattle off little things each of them do that annoy each other? Seriously that’s what this episode is all about. You may have been confused since it means almost the entire episode is just padding! Though to be fair it’s not awful padding. The plus side is that scene in the bathroom is really pretty good. Well acted and it’s nice they got the kids into it at the end. Always nice to see Debra and Ray happy around each other and even playing with the kids. I always wanted to see an episode from the kids point of view.
Grade-B-
Season 7, Episode 8
Annoying Kid
Plot Summary-Ray finds the twin’s new friend more than a little annoying.
Nitpick of the episode-The parents of Spencer need to teach their kid manners, if I had talked back to an adult the way he does to Ray when I was a kid it wouldn’t have been waved off as being charming or cute. Trust me. To be fair it’s not all the kids fault, the parents should be backing Ray up not sitting there smiling at their charming son. You have to give your kids some rules and restrictions or you have a kid like Spencer who does whatever he wants and never listens. The kid is also to,involved in his games which could hurt him growing up.
Best Line-“If the twins did that it’d say daddy stinks”…Ray
Episode Fun Fact –
Deleted Scenes-none
Syndication Edit-Marie telling a story about Ray, longer ending
Best Character-Ray, on his side here
Worst Character-Debra, she doesn’t listen to Ray when he complains about Spencer. Who’s shocked? She doesn’t even back him up when he is trying to tell Spencer not to jump on the beds. Why?? Does she want the kids jumping on the beds? And of course when Ray comments on the kid suddenly he hates all children. Ugh!
Final Thoughts-Well let’s be fair, Spencer is unbearably annoying! Basically just “Cookies” all over again. Rather than Peggy we have Spencer, and rather than Debra thinking Ray hates women because he hates Peggy, she insists he hates children now. Latter, rinse, repeat. It’s even kind of the same ending where Debra realizes that Ray is right after all. Why is this season so repetitive? Spencer is ridiculous and the topper is that whole thing about spiders. It’s nice to see in the end where Debra realizes how awful the parents really are.
Grade-C+
Season 7, Episode 9
She’s the One
Plot Summary-Everyone thinks Robert’s new girlfriend is perfect, especially Robert, until Ray catches her eating a fly!
Nitpick of the episode-This series could occasionally get far-fetched. I thought “The Cult” was pushing it, but think the frog lady of Massapequa is the topper!
Best Line-“The fly, that was flying around… Angela killed it, it fell on the table, she put it in the napkin and the she ate it!”…Ray (and it’s funnier to hear than to read)
Episode Fun Fact –When Ray sees the girl eat the fly, he stands there motionless for about three or four minutes. Ray Romano nearly passed out after doing that. Pretty impressive gag. This is also the highest rated episode of the series-I have no idea why.
Deleted Scenes-none
Syndication Edit-Robert explains how he met Angela, some lines of dialogue as Robert escapes through the window (explaining how Robert got wet so fast in the syndicated version)
Best Character-Robert, his reaction to the frogs is great and that final tag is perfect. Ray deserves a mention for his priceless reaction to Angela eating the fly.
Worst Character-Debra, now you’re going to be shocked but when Ray reveals what he saw, Debra refuses to believe him. Even after Robert confirms it. Seriously what is up with her??
Final Thoughts-Well folks, here it is .The last “what’s wrong with Robert” episode. And all the tropes are drawn out, from Ray doesn’t want to see Robert happy to the new girl being crazy to Marie thinking Robert is gay to the standard speech from Debra. It’s about time to, we’ve had enough Robert dating. Let’s see how he would handle a relationship and marriage. But we’ll discuss that more in the next week. Everything else in the episode is borderline ridiculous with the frog woman who eats flies. But the episode doesn’t get that carried away with it. And it’s true her eating the fly wasn’t crazy enough so her frog filled apartment was needed to make the point clear. Though that last scene gets surprisingly dramatic as Robert admits the problem is him, and then storms out! Even Frank seems concerned. Then we get the tag where we see Robert spill some drinks on a woman..who happens to be Amy. The two just lock looks, and nothing else is said. The studio audience gets it and even applauds!
Grade-B+
Season 7, Episode 10
Marie’s Vision
Plot Summary-After Marie gets new glasses she is suddenly seeing all kinds of new little things about everyone, like Ray’s gray temples and Debra’s thin eyelashes.
Nitpick of the episode-This sort of thing happens a lot on this and other shows. We’re told in the opening that Marie’s vision is “getting worst”. Wait, when was it getting bad in the first place? Some shows are smart enough to set stuff like this up but most do this gimmick where the characters have been aware of the problem even if the audience isn’t. Oh and need I mention Marie’s glasses are never seen again after this episode?
Best Line-“No! I’m really tissed!”…Robert
Episode Fun Fact –This is a thanksgiving episode, believe it or not
Deleted Scenes-Ray obsessing about his grey hairs (leading to the show polish he has on later, good edit this was totally unnecessary)
Syndication Edit-Lines of dialogue about Robert’s Botox injections, the tag with Debra asking about her eyebrows
Best Character-Marie, even though she resists the idea she needs glasses (in typical fashion Ray and Robert are scared to death to even mention it) she does relent and I give her credit for that.
Worst Character-Robert, Botox? Really????
Final Thoughts-More forced conflict. When Marie says she and Frank has a loveless marriage Frank get enraged and storms out. Marie follows and apologizes. The problem? This was the last few minutes of the episode. All the episode was about was Marie getting glasses and noticing little things about everyone. We didn’t need this forced conflict in the last few minutes. Maybe they just didn’t know how to end it? The episode isn’t bad and it’s nice to see Amy once again.
Grade-B
